EDUCATION NEWS Parents as Partners in Career Planning The Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde's Education Division is sponsoring a "Parents as Partners in Qireer Planning" workshop on Monday, December 6, from 9:00 A.M. to 3:30 P.M. The workshop will be held in the Tribal Community Center in Grand Ronde. Focus of the workshop is targeted for JOM (Johnson 0Malley) Title V, parents, parent committees, and Indian Education staff who work with high school and junior high school aged children, and will prepare participants to lead parents in career planning groups. Participants will receive materials that focus on values and interests which are geared toward the year 2000 workforce. The session will help parents develop communication skills necessary to facilitate their children's career planning. Featured presenter is Ms. Heather Alberts, who is part of the Center for Educational Development staff and directs the New Frontiers Project, in Tucson, Arizona. New Frontiers isaSouthwest equity program that trains educators, students, and community members in preparing for a new future. Ms. Alberts has presented at conferences throughout Arizona, Nevada, California, and Texas. She has a Master's degree in Counselling and Guidance from the University of Virginia. The workshop is free, and open to all JOM, Indian Education programs, and parents. For more information or a registration form, contact Dean Azule in the Education department Scholarship Opportunities The Dr. Rosa Minoka Hill Fund assists in the placement through scholarships of capable, motivated Indian students in some of the nation's outstanding private college and preparatory secondary schools. Applications are made each year from September through December for entry during the following year. Interested students should apply during their 8th 9th, or 10th grade year of school. Two will go to graduating high school seniors and two will go to students already attending an institution of higher education and studying Natural Resources. These girts came prepared. Student Responsibilities 1 . All students are responsible for having their grade reports sent to the Tribal Education Program upon completion of each termsemester. Either make arrangements with the Registrar's Office to have the reports sent directly to the Tribal Office, or mail a copy of your grade report to the Education Department yourself. 2. Students, please notify the Education Program of address changes and telephone number changes. 3. If emergendes occur that effectyour attendance, notify the Education Program and the college immediately. (Tribal Education Office, College Business Office, College Financial Aid Office, and College Registrar's Office.) 4. You must obtain a 2.00 GPA and complete a minimum of twelve credit hours per termsemester to be eligible for assistance. 5. Students who are placed on Probationary Status will not be awarded the following term until they have provided the EducationPrograman OFFICIAL COPYof their transcripts. Transcripts must include the term of probation and must show successful completion of twelve credit hours earned with at least a 2.00 GPA. NO AWARD WILL BE MADE UNTIL THE TRANSCRIPTS HAVE BEEN SUBMITTED ! 6. Continuing students must file their Federal Financial Aid Forms by February 15, 1994. You must provide a copy of your application to the Education Program for filing information. 7. All students must sign a "Release of Information" form regarding attendance, financial aid transcripts, education budgets, and progress and grade reports. 8. It is your responsibility to remain in "good academic standing". Failure to meet minimum academic requirements during this period will result in suspension. 9. Students who withdraw from school due to medical or health related reasons must obtaina Statement of Verification from their physician that identifies ability to return to school. Copies of physician's statements must be provided to the Education Program 10.
