Hugs and Kissess, from your cousin HalonaRae! IN MEMORY Marjorie Menard Mortenson Tribal member Marjorie Mortenson passed away in Portland, Oregon on November 3 . She was 70 years old. Funeral services were held at Lincoln Willamette Funeral Chapel ofLincoln Willamette Funeral Directors in Portland on November 5. She is survived by her husband, Morty, daughters Sharon Schnider, and Kathy Bremer; sons Ronnie, Elrey, Arnie, Arthur, and Paul. Her sisters. Alice Balza, and Minnie Davis. Marjorie had many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. She was a strong and beautiful lady who will live in the hearts of her family forever. Ballroom Dance Class Chemeketa Community College will be offering a beginning Ballroom Dance Class, Winter Term at St. Michael's gym. Classes will be held Friday nights from 7:00 to 9:30 P.M. beginning January 7, 1994 for eight weeks. The cost is $40 per person, and couples are encouraged to participate. New Head Start Workers DONNA MARNER My name is Donna Marner and I am the cook at the Grand Ronde Head Start. I have lived here for a year and a half. I have been a Head Start parent here and also in California, where I grew up. IVe been married for eight years and have three children; Bryan, Michael, and Ashley. My husband Vaughn, and I are also part of a family-owned business here in Grand Ronde-Sun Radiance Stoves. I really enjoy working here at Head Start the kids are terrific, the parents are great. It's nice to meet the parents of the children I see so much of. Angie, Shari, and June are all wonderful people to work with. I hope to be part of this program for a long time, and meet many more families in our community. Xrr 4 i H ? SHARI SHELL My name is Shari Shell, and I am the assistant teacher for Grand Ronde Head Start. This is my second year as an assistant for this program. My first year, I was in the Willamina Head Start classroom. Prior to my teaching opportunities, I have been able to have three of my four children participate in this program. It was this experience that prompted my interest in children and their families, and the importance of early childhood education. I am a ten-year resident, having travelled west from Missouri. I am looking forward to an exciting year in the Head Start classroom and hope that community members will drop by and introduce themselves to me. Dorothy Led ford Retires Dorothy Ledford, who has worked as a housekeeper for Nantich Sahallie Youth Treatment Facility since it opened, retired in November. She thought she was coming to work to pick up her final paycheck, but instead she got a surprise retirement party, complete with cake and a turkey dinner. She was also presented with a few going away presents, including a plaque from the Nanitch staff, and a Pendleton blanket from Tribal Council. Dorothy is a Grand Ronde tribal member who grew up in Roseburg, and is planning on retiring there. "I have most of my family there," she said. She has eight children and thirteen grandchildren. Employees of Nanitch say they will miss Dorothy, and selected her for Employee of the Month. - rj R, . - f 1 Vv 4 j HI 1 V i W , i if it- 1 . I- I p New Face: Sanda "Sam" Henny Sanda L. Henny, Sam for short, is the Executive Assistant at Spirit Mountain Development Corporation. Sam's family name is Langley, Roscoe and Rosella were her parents and her grandmother was Hatti Leno. In 1968, Sam married John L. Henny of Brooks, Oregon, at St. Michael's church and will celebrate their25th anniversary on November 30. The Hennys have two children; Adam of Beaverton, and Sarah, who is employed at the tribal health clinic. John and Sam own and operate San John Nursery, Inc. in Brooks, propagating exbury azaleas, dwarf Hinoki cypress, Kalmia, rhododendron and various other plant stock. The family business has been operating since 1950. Sam is excited about her new position and is willing to accept the challenges it will present. "The best part of my job is being able to come home again," she said. New Face: Verna Mancha Verna Mancha has . . been employed with the Tribe for several months now, she is the Foster care program Coordinator of the Social Services department. A recognized member of the Blackfeet Tribe of Montana, Verna lived on the reservation for most of her life. In 1982, she earned a B. A. in Elementary Education from the University of Montana and graduated with honors. After graduation she was employed by Browning Public Schools for several years, then moved to Washington where she was employed as a teacher. In 1 992, she received her M. Ed. degree from Heritage College. Verna, who commutes from Salem, said, "My personal goal is to provide high-quality services to children who are placed in foster care." New Face: Darrel W. Kipp Darrel Kipo. -1 Family and Children Services Caseworker, is a member of the Umatilla tribe from Pendleton, Oregon. During the summer he worked in the Chemical Dependency Program, and now has taken a job with Social Services. He has recently completed graduate school at Western Oregon btate College. Darrel has a wife and two children. He has helped build the Tribe's sweatlodge, and participated in last year's Pow-wow. His other hobbies include cultural activities such as vision quests on Spirit Mountain, hunting, and fishing. Darrel would like to see a lot more children and elders working together on projects.
