Education Update
By Dean Azule, Education Director
During the last week of September, community
colleges and universities were bombarded with a last-minute
stampede of students seeking registration and admission for
Fall term, 1993. Because in years past the Tribal Education
Program has also been bombarded with last minute requests, .
the program established deadlines for accepting applications
for Higher Education and Adult Vocational Training . If you
are currently seeking possible entry into school for Winter
Term 1994 or Spring 1994, you must have your completed
application into the Education office by November 1, 1993 .
No applications received after this date will be considered
until Spring term 1994.
Students who are just now getting around to filling
outtheir Financial Aidforms and tribal education Applications
for the 1 993 -94 school year be advised. Just because you've
completed the application process you are not guaranteed
financial assistance. Currently both the Higher Education
and Adult Vocational Training Programs have expended
funding for Fall Term. Dependent upon the waiting list for
Winter Term assistance and the date your completed
application is received, you still may not receive assistance
if all program funds are depleted.
With the start of the new school year the Tribal
Education Division would like to offer our support and best
wishes for a successful Fall Term. The Education Division
staff, Education Committee and Tribal Council are proud of
all the academic and personal accomplishments our students
have made. We ask all tribal members to join us as we
demonstrate our support for all enrolled students during the
1993-94 school year!

Congratulations To OSU
The Oregon State University Native Americans in
Marine Science Program has just received advance notice
that they have been approved for renewal for a National
Science Foundation grant for a second three-year cycle. The
grant will enable the NAMS Project to serve twice as many
Native Americans and Alaskan Native students at OSU. Dr.
Jeff Gonor, NAMS Director, thanked the tribal leadership
for support demonstrated by the Indian communities in
Oregon. The NAMS Program will work to continue to
encourage and increase numbers of American Indian students
in the scientific professions, particularly marine science.
In the past the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde
has had several students participate in the OSU NAMS
Program. Students seeking more information regarding the
Native Americans in Marine Science Program can contact
Dr. Jeff Gonor's office at OSU, 737-3504, or write: NAMS
Program, OSU, Oceanography Adm. Building, 104.
