Tribal Council Election Results THE BALLOTS ARE IN The 1993 Grand Ronde Tribal Council Election was held September 10, at the tribal offices in Grand Ronde. Two incumbents, Mark Mercier and Leon Tom as well as one challenger, Val Grout wereelected. The members-elect were sworn in by Tribal Court Judge Les Marston at the Council meeting on Wednesday, September 15. The Council then voted to re-elect Mark Mercier as the Tribal Council Chairman. Kathryn Harrison is Vice-Chair, and Candy Robertson is Secretary. Mark Mercier received 150 total votes, Leon "Chips" Tom received 138 total votes, and Val Grout received 125 total votes. Only about 300 people voted out of approximately 1,800 eligible voters, either in person, or by absentee ballot. HIGH STAKES BINGO KKNO , VIDEO GAMING MACHINES The development of Spirit Mountain Resort is progressing according to plan. The groundbreaking for the gaming facility was held on September 27. The event, which included traditional ceremonies as well as statements from Mark Mercier, Council Chair, Kathryn Harrison, Vice Chair, and Bruce Thomas, General Manager of Spirit Mountain Development Corporation, was attended by many of the Tribe's friends and supporters. Look for the new sign (pictured) announcing construction of the facility on highway 18. Spirit Mountain Development Corporation has chosen Paul Rink Architecture, Inc. to design the facility. The architect has already completed conceptual drawings and is working with SMDC on the final design. A committee comprised of Kathryn Harrison, Merle Holmes, and Tammy Cook are working with historians and others in an effort to incorporate the Tribe's cultural heritage into the fi nal design. The Corporation expects to select the general contractor by early October and commence construction of the facility by the end of the year. Meanwhile, the site is being cleared and rocked to prepare it for construction. SMDC consultants predict that construction will be completed by fall or early winter of 1994. Members of Spirit Mountain Development Corporation staff will attend General Council meetings to provide updates or answer questions.
