Smoke Signals August 1993 Page 3 NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS Weddings and Anniversaries Tribal member Perry Burgess and his wife Doreen celebrated 50 years of marriage on July 3. Perry was stationed in the Navy in Monterey, California when they were married in 1943. Now living in Federal Way, Washington, the couple moved there in 1951. They enjoy travelling, spending time with their family, and have cared for foster children over the years. . Peggy Lynn Brickell and Rodney William Biery will be married August 14, 1993. Peggy is the daughter of Bruce Brickell and Myrna Langley of Willamina. She attended Willamina High School. Rodney is the son of William and Inez Biery of Carlton, Oregon. He is a graduate of Willamina High School. Grand Ronde tribal member Adam John Henny of Salem, son of Sanda L. Langley and John L. Henny, will be married Saturday, August 28, to Julie Ann DeVoe of Beaverton. Adam is a graduate of Oregon State University and has a dual degree in horticulture and botany. He is employed at the Arctic Slope Consultants Group in Portland. Julie is a graduate of Oregon Health Sciences University and is a registered nurse, employed at University Hospital. They will make their home in Beaverton. Special Thanks The families of Donna Holmes and Marie Logan would like to extend thanks to Confederated Tribes of Siletz, Frank Simmons, and Gilbert Towner for their assistance in the funeral of Kenneth Holmes. Foster Parent Gathering By Verna Jim, Program Coordinator The Foster Care Association is inviting all foster parents and family members to the 1st Annual Foster Parent Gathering of Cultures Picnic to be held at Bush Park in Salem, Oregon on August 21 from 1:30 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. All foster parents will be honored with a certificate of appreciation. Come one and all! Lots of food and fun activites for the whole family. See you there! Dance Classes Are you ready for the Pow-wow? Dance classes are scheduled for August 2, 9, and 16 from 6:30 to 8:30 P.M. at the Tribal Community Center. Everyone is welcome! AFSJOBS Program The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde offers a AFSJOBS program to tribal members under Adult and Family Services. This program is to assist tribal members in job search, job placement, and job referrals. Appointments for JOB intakes and orientation will be every Tuesday and Thursday from 9:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. Appointments can be made through Carmen Mercier, JOBS Coordinator. The toll-free number at Social Services is: 1-800-775-0095. Raffle Items Needed Donations and raffle items are needed for this year's Pow-wow. If you have anything you would like, to donate, please contact the Pow-wow Committee or Mychal Childers at 879-2039. Wellness Class Offered The tribal Wellness Component is sponsoring a special class for all staff and tribal members on August 2, 1993 at 12:00 noon. It will be at the Tribal Community Center. The class title is: What Makes You Eat What Makes You Stop Eating, and is presented by Jean Charles Azure, a registered dietician. A salad and fruit will be provided. Tribe Offers Seminar To Staff The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde Employee Assistance Program and Pacific Gateway Hospital and Counseling Centers presents Professional Co-Dependency, a seminar for employees. Mark Lenetsky, Director of Clinical Outreach at Pacific gateway Hospital will discuss boundary issues between service providers and their clients. The seminar will be Friday, August 6, 1993 from 1 :00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. at the Community Center. Recreational Volleyball Tourney The Wellness and Prevention Program is pleased to announce it is sponsoring this year's Volleyball Tournament at the 1993 Pow-wow. The tournament this year is going to be a little different, because it is designed for friends and family members to join in and play low-intensity volleyball together. So be thinking of team members (three men and three women) and start practicing! $60.00 entry fee for whole team, includes 6 tournament t shirts per team. Attn: Ten Holsclaw EMT Class Beginning There will be an Emergency Medical Treatment (EMT-1) class beginning November 2 for anyone who is interested. The class will be two nights per week for six months and the cost will be $300 per student. Spirit Mountain Open House Spirit Mountain Board of Directors and Staff invite all tribal members to an Open House on August 11, 1993 from 6:00-8:00 P.M. Elders needing transportarion to the Open House can call 879-2350 for more information. Council Adopts Ordinances On July 14 the Tribal Council adopted two new ordinances. The Small Claims ordinance was adopted and will go into affect August 20, 1993. The Elder's Committee Ordinance was also adopted. Elder's committee nominations will take place on September 12 at the General Council Meeting. Elders who are tribal members will be the only people allowed to nominate committee members. The election will take place during the October General Council Meeting. Only Grand Ronde Tribal Elders with verified signatures on file will be allowed to vote.
