Tribal Member Has Bingo Ideas To the Editor: I'm glad to hear the Tribe is considering other sources of revenue besides forestry. Since I don't live in the area and have never had the honor to visit, please forgive my presumption in presenting some ideas to add to the Bingo discussions. 1. The Bingo Hall should be totally "climate responsive". It should be properly insulated using recycled materials. Lighting should incorporate as much of daylight as possible with energy efficient fixtures supplying the rest. The toilets should all be "low flow" and all the fixtures which use water should be top of the line for efficiency. 2. There should be a service station next door to the facility that recycles oil and tires. Possibly using the recycled tires to pave parking lots. Even finding other uses, like insulation. 3. The Tribe should save all the Yew trees for Cancer research. Maybe farm the yew bark without having to cut down the whole tree-many woman's lives could be saved from Taxol a drug used to fight breast cancer which comes from the Yew. 3. "Ecotourism"--The Tribe could be a nationwide example of energy efficiency and conservation practices. Tourists would come to see old growth forests since they are endangered. Sincerely, Judith Pettibone, Kalapuya Kaneoke, Hawaii Cemetery Committee Thanks The Cemetery Committee would like to thank Cindy Butler for all the help she has given us, painting the Cemetery office, cleaning it, and putting flowers on the graves. Thanks to the Lady's Alter Society, Tina, Cindy, Cherryl, Vonnie, and all the young guys that helped us set up tables and lunch in the gym for the Kenneth D. Holmes family service. Special Uncle "Saluted" Jeese A ugustine "Benny" Bahr is a Grand Ronde tribal member and a veteran living in Dallas, Oregon. His nephew has written a special tribute to him. My Uncle was inducted into the armed forces in 1 942 at the age of 1 9. He was proudly "honorably discharged" in April of 1946 a Private 1st Class. He came home from the service on the Battleship Liberty. His five medals have been misplaced ovef the years, but from his memory and original discharge papers the medals he received were: European African Middle Eastern Service Medal American Theatre Service Medal Victory Medal Two Good Conduct Medals Uncle spent boot camp at Camp Joe T. Robinson in Little Rock, Arkansas. He served with the 633rd Military Police Escort, the Grand Company as a balloon crewman, . and in the Military Police. My Uncle speaks jargon daily and always to any of the people he meets. As long as I have been walking I can remember the kindness and respect he has for his brothers and sisters and many nieces and nephews. He has always been proud to be an Indian and to speak his native tongue his grandfather (Jesse "Chuppy" Smith) taught him. Uncle lives in Dallas, Oregon with his wife of 36 years. They have no children. He has worked hard all of his life in the fields, as a woodcutter, farm hand, carpenter, and green chain operator for Willamette Industries. He retired at age 62. Uncle will be 72 years old this year and is still stout as a bull. He means a great deal to me.
