SHORT TAKES...
Elders' New Mealsite
The Senior Mealsite has now moved to the
Community Center and the Senior Mealsite staff will be
serving lunch on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
Lunch is available for people under 55 years of
age for $2.50 per meal. Menus will be posted on the
modular bulletin boards and if there isa day you would like
to have lunch, please call extension 2410 to reserve a
lunch. Orders to go are available and the senior staff will
advise you as to the best time to pick your lunch up.
We welcome everyone to come in and share
lunch, ideas, and the latest event in your programs.
Memorial Day Pow-wow
There will be a Memorial Day Pow-wow May 28,
29, and 30 at the Portland International Raceway, located
in north Portland off of 1-5. There will be teepees set up,
Bingo, canoe races, and a raffle. This Pow-wow is
sponsored by Portland Native American Inter-Tribal
Council, North Portland Citizen's Committee, Kenton
Neighborhood Association, Portsmouth Neighborhood
Association, and LIHNAPO. For concession, vendors, or
set-up, please call Renaldo Minmjarez (503) 286-3459, or

News From Forestry
The tribal Forestry Department is creating an
applicant pool for our 1993 Fire Season, If you are
interested in being on our fire crew on a needed basis,
please obtain an application through the Tribal Personnel
Department Be sure to include any fire training you may
have received and red card information.
The Natural Resources Department has a new
firewood policy in effect for 1993, There will no longer be
rotating list that is used for issuing firewood permits to
tribal members under the age of 62. Be watching for
articles in Smoke Signals for firewood availability. Once
firewood availability has been advertised, the permits will
be issued on a first come-first serve basis. The
advertisements should give you the dates and times of
where to obtain the firewood cutting permit.
USDA Poster Contest
The Department of Agriculture (USDA) is
sponsoring a National Poster Contest for American Indian
Heritage Month in November 1993. Entries are being i
solicited from Tribes, reservations, community I
organizations, schools, and youth organizations. ;
USDA will designate a panel to select the winning
work. The winning entry will be the design of USDA's
National American Indian Heritage Month Poster. The
artist of the winning entry will be invited to Washington,:
D C, to participate in USDA's opening ceremony for
American Indian Heritage Month in November, 1993.
The entries should highlight "tribal sovereignty"
andor "tribal spirituality" Fore other entry requirements,
rules, and contest application, contact Tracy Olson at the
tribal offices 879-2254. If you reach voice mail, please
leave a message.
Pow-wow Will Honor
Boarding School Grads
The Gathering of the Boarding Schools Pow-wow
will take place May 28-3 1 over the Memorial Day holiday at
the White Swan Pavilion and celebration grounds in White
Swan, Washington.
This first-time event is sponsored by the graduates
of the Native American Boarding Schools (GNABS), a
regional organization.
GNABS is seeking toattract all studentsofNorthwest
tribes who attended any of the following schools: Fort
Simcoe Industrial School, Fort Simcoe, Wash; Cushman
Indian School, Tacoma; Tulalip Indian School, Marysville;
Pascal Sherman, Colville; Warm Springs Boarding School;
Chemawa Indian School, Chemawa, Oregon; Intermountain,
Utah; Sherman, Riverside, California; Institute of American
Indian Arts, Santa Fe; Southwest Indian Polytechnic Institute,
Albuquerque; Concho, Riverside and Fort Sill, Oklahoma;
Haskell Indian Junior College, Lawrence, Kansas; and any
other federally recognized Indian boarding school in the
nation.
The oldest Yakima member who attended Fort
Simcoe school which opened in 1860 and closed in 1922 is
Ellen Saluskin of Toppenish, who is 105 years old.

Thanks & Appreciation
Diana Robertson, tribal member and daughter of
Candy and Jess Robertson would like to express her thanks
to those of you who bought items from her for her fundraising
school project Thanks to you, Diana contributed $ 1 75 to the
PTAproject that will helpprovidenewplayground equipment
for the Willamina school. She also won a camera for her
efforts. To Sally Shenk, PTA President and to PTA members,
thank you for your efforts to continually improve the school.
The family of Opal Robertson would like to take this
time to extend their thanks and great appreciation to those
who were there in our family's time of sorrow.
Before and during her time of needed care, Opal
touched the lives of many and we will miss her. We hold
special thanks to Nelda Logan and Chris Curl for filling in
when family members needed a break. And Debby and Rock,
we love you. Ed, Shirley, and Jan, thanks for the phone calls,
understanding and caring.
Many thanks to the Tribal Cemetery Committe and
the St. Michael's Alter Society for providing a delicious meal
after the service.

helped in any way before, during, and after the funeral and
private ceremony. My God bless each and every one of you.
Candy Robertson
Marraige Announcement
Pat and Ida Paterson of Willamina, Oregon and Jess
and Candy Robertson of Grand Ronde, Oregon wish to
announce the marraige of their son Jesse Robertson, Jr. to
Kathy Barker. Kathy is the daughter of Mae Barker of
Dallas, Oregon. Jesse and Kathy were married on February
14, 1993. The Honorable Bill Jolley officiated. The ceremony
was held at the home of Pat and Ida in Willamina. Jesse and
Kathy flew to Reno, Nevada for their honeymoon and now
reside in Willamina.
Council Nominations
Nominations for Tribal
Council candidates will be held at
the May 1993 General Council
Meeting.
Any duly enrolled member
who will be 18 years of age or older
on the date of the election is
qualified to be a candidate.
Any eligible voter may
nominate a candidate from the floor
atsaid May meeting. The candidate
must be present at the meeting to
either accept or decline the
nomination.
Council members up for re
election are: Leon "Chip" Tom,
Margaret Provost, and Chairman
Mark Mercier.
Cemetery News
The Cemetery office will be open Saturday, May 29
and Sunday, May 30. We want people to sign in and see if
they want gravemarkers put on any of the cemetery graves.
Coffee and cookies will be served both days. Also, anyone
who has any service memorandum please bring it with you.
Here are a list of rules regarding use of the tribal cemetery.
1. Plastic flowers must be removed after two weeks. Please
take them with you or they will be removed by the Cemetery
Committee and stored in the greenhouse.
2 . Please advise the office of your intent to plant flowers or
shrubs at a gravesite. Someone will show you where to plant.
3. Please advise the office of your intent to install a headstone
on a grave. You must provide your own materials.
4. The cemetery is not a playground. The Tribe is not liable
for injuries incurred at a cemetery.
5. Please drive slowly through the cemetery. Stay on the
designated road. Do not drive on the lawn. Park in the
designated areas only.
6. The bathroom is for your convenience. Please keep it clean
for the next person's use.

Veteran's Pow-wow
There will be a Veteran's Pow-wow Saturday, June
12, 1993 at St. Michael's Church in Grand Ronde. Flagswill
be retired at 6:00 P.M., but the events may run later
depending upon weather conditions.
