SMDC Tourism Meeting
The Spirit Mountain Development Corporation
held a tourism meeting on Thursday, September 17, but no
one attended. The meeting was to present ideas currently
under consideration by the corporation in the area of
tourism and field suggestions from the community.
The lack of attendance at the meeting will not
deter us from listening to your ideas. If you have any
suggestions on the subject or would like to hear our views,
feel free to contact us. Stop by and see us at tribal
headquarters. Ask for Beth, Chris, or Tammy. We are very
interested in your opinions.
Elders' Workshop Helps Answer
Questions
On September 8th three representatives from the
legal community spoke at the Elders' Will Workshop, held
at the Senior Mealsite. Meg Goldberg, from Oregon Legal
Services, Ron Talmey, from MarionPolk Legal Aid
Service, Inc, and George Rives, a retired attorney who
volunteers his time working for OLS. All answered questions
and spoke about the importance of having a will. For
example, if a person doesn't have a will, usually the next of
kin receives all property after that person passes away. A
will is a good idea for people who want certain things to go
to certain people.
It is also a good idea to have a will so there is no
confusion to anyone about how you want your property
handled. There are many technicalities, but each one is
important when facing the decision to allocate your
possessions. For instance, do you have a large estate or a
small one? Do you want to divide your property among all
your children? How much real property do you have?
(Home, land.) How much personal property do you have?
(Vehicles, jewelry, etc)
All of these things factor into your will. It may not
seem important, but it is. Said Mr. Rives, "A will is a good
idea for anyone, even if you don't think you own that much.
Most people own more than they think."
For those elders who were unable to attend the
workshop and are interested in obtaining legal services,
keep in mind that it is FREE, and there is an attorney in
your area who is willing to answer your questions. Marion
Polk Legal Aid Services serves Marion and Polk Counties,
and Oregon Legal Services is based in McMinnville and
serves Yamhill County. There are services available inyour
area as well. Contact the legal services organization in your
local phone book, or contact the county you live in.

Photo Exchange Offered
A photograph exchange has been established, and
is available to all tribal members. The purpose of the
program is to preserve tribal history through the sharing of
old familytribal photographs. Also, as a service, the
program will attemptto identify subjects in old photographs
through the efforts of Elders and other resourses within
our community. You need not share photos to obtain this
service.
Eventually, we hope to tell the history of Grand
Ronde through photographs selected from this exchange.
To encourage people to participate in this program, we will
not only trade NEGATIVES of the photos, but if your
photo is used in the historic display your name will
accompany it.
If you would like to participate in this exciting new
program, send your negative(s) along with a self-addi essed
envelope to:
