Study Claims Saunas and Hot Tubs Increase Birth Defects Pregnant women who soak in sauna or hot tubs increase the chances their fetus may develop a crippling birth defect, a study of the Boston University School of Medicine says. "Use of hot tub by mothers during the first six weeks of pregnancy increased risk by two or three times," says Aubrey Milunsky, the study's lead author. The study examined the habits of 22,762 women. Of that group, 1,254 reported hot tub use in early pregnancy, and seven had fetuses with flaws in their brain and spinal cord cell structure. That translates to a rate of 5.6 defects per 1,000 women. As many of you are aware, Linda Smith and I were sadly absent from the Pow-wow celebration because of our prior commitment with the Community Health Representative Basic 100 Training Course in Sacramento, California. This three week course was designed by Indian Health Service to assist CHR personnel in their work in the community with their clients. We attended classes covering a wide array of subjects; everything from Anatomy and Physiology to Environmental Health issues, Diabetes, Mental Health, Dental, and Family Planning. We had a test after every session, to prepare us for the final exam, which covered every subject. There were a total of 36 CHR students in the class, including four outstanding individuals from the Navajo Nation. According to our instructor, we were the first class to have every student pass. We made a lot of very special friends in Sacramento, people that neither Linda nor I will ever forget. We want to send out a special "hello" to Naomi and Darlene in Southern California, Dondi in Ukiah, Willie and Rosie in Washington, Robert, Juanita, and Eunice in Oklahoma, and Deb Scott in Warm Springs. But we never forgot about the people back home and missed them very much. Give us a call at the Health Department, we're looking forward to getting back in touch with our people and keeping everyone healthy, i Prevention Counselor Resigns September 15, 1992, was tribal member Camille VanVleet's last day working for the Tribe as the Alcohol and Drug PreventionEducation Counselor.
