Smoke Signals October 1992 Page 12 TRIBAL MEMBERS FILL NEW POSITIONS MARY COOK Mary Cook has been hired to work in the Tribe's Head Start program. She has been an assistant teacher with Yamhill Community Action Program Head Start for almost two years. She has attended several workshops on Early Childhood Education and attended the National Head Start convention this spring in San Diego. She is also working on her childhood Development Associate degree, and enjoys her work with Head Start very much! Mary's interests include 4-H activities, Barnyard Buddies, and being a Girl Scout Leader. Her activities are an indication of her love for children of all ages. Mary lives with her husband on their family farm outside of WiDamina. She has four children. Mary is also a proud member of the Blackfeet Tribe of Browning, Montana, and is glad to be working with the tribal members of Grand Ronde. . in iwf 1 Mary Cook JUNE OLSON J uneOlson is the new Family Advocate for Yamhill County Head Start at Grand Ronde. She recently graduated from the University of Oregon with a Bachelor's degree is Psychology. As Family Advocate, it is June's responsibility to coordinate delivery of social services, health, nutrition, parent involvement, and mental health services for children and parents participating in this program. Said June, "While I am a tribal member, I spent my childhood in Hood River, and raised my three children in Vancouver, Washington. I began to feel a need to return to Grand Ronde, not as a visitor, but as a member of the community." June also said that since she began working for the tribe, she has met many people in the community, including the parents and children participating in the Head Start program. ' i iX;. ,1. ; : I . f Chris Leno CHRIS LENO Chris Leno is a new addition to Spirit Mountain Development Corporation. He is functioning as the Business Development Analyst under Beth Oliver, General Manager. Some duties he will be asked to perform include researching grants, gathering information on possible business ventures, and attending conferences. In some cases he will be traveling to meet people who could be valuable contacts to the corporation as well as the Tribe. Chris has one term of classes left before receiving his B.S. degree in Marketing Management at Oregon State University. He plans on attending classes two days per week, while working with the corporation the other three. He will receive his degree in December, at which time he will begin working full time. I ANGELA BEDORTHA Angie Bedortha is a tribal member who has recently been hired by theYCAP to be the teacher of the new Grand Ronde Head Start class. Through the support of the Tribal Education Program, Angie was able to earn her degree in Early Childhood Education from Chemeketa Community College, December 1991. She is excited to now be working closely with the Tribe in this joint effort with Yamhill Community Action Program to establish a Head Start in Grand Ronde. In the future, Angie and others associated with Head Start hope to receive their own monies to administer the program. For now, working with YCAP administration is an opportunity to learn how the organization is operated. Angie believes that our tribal members and the community will greatly benefit from having this program located here, and the support it offers. Vn .mi '3ft 3 10) : 9L Angie Bedortha Tammy Galligher TAMMY GALLIGHER Tammy Galligher is another new addition to Spirit Mountain Development Corporation. She is an enrolled tribal member, and the daughter of Dick and Leonette Galligher. Since returning to the Northwest b 1989, after attending Boston college for two years, Tammy has participated in several tribal events. She worked with the vendors for the Pow-wow Committee, traveled to Pow wows with the tribe's Royalty, and attended dance class. Her interests include Native American culture, arts and crafts, jewelry, and collecting baskets. Tammy's main functions for SMDC will be the accounting system, conference schedule, computer data, procurement and purchasing. She is happy to be on staff and taking an active role in assisting the future development of the Tribe. USDA UPDATE Submitted by Margo Norton, USDA Director I am starting to get back on track with lots of help from Wanda Belgrade, USDA clerk. I have made a few changes that hopefully will be appealing to USDA participants. The major change is that we are scheduling one night per month for evening appointments. We will be open regular hours, and our evening appointments start at 6:00 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. (last appointment.) This convenience is for those participants who work or have long distances to travel. Please call for an appointment. In Salem, the evening appointments will be on Wednesday, in Siletz, on Thursday. If you or someone you know may qualify for this program, please call 1-800-922-1399. Next distribution dates are Salem: October 6, 7, and 8, and Siletz: October 20-23. Night appointments are available after October 22nd.
