Witnesses Needed
I would like to thank the Pow-wow Committee
and the tribe for the opportunity to be Grand Marshall in
the parade during Pow-wow. I also would like to thank
everyone who prayed for me and supported me after my
accident a year ago.
At this time I am in need of help from the people
who may have witnessed my accident a year ago, August
17. 1 need witnesses who would be willing to sign affidavits
in my defense. Without this help, my medical bills may not
be taken care of. If you were at the Grand Ronde Pow
wow last year, 1991, and remember what happened, I
could use your help. Please contact me at 876-4663.
Thank you so much,
Shirley Flansberg
Thanks for Help During Pow-wow
I would like to say thank you to my special family
and friends for always doing a good job in the kitchen at
Pow-wow time. To Rick, Mike, Ike, Lloyd, Tim, Les, and
Mark for the great job cooking breakfasts and barbecuing
the fish. To the girls-Penny, Jan, Debby, and Sue in the
kitchen for all the dish-washing. And a very special thanks
to all the girls who made the frybrcad out in the heat.
Thanks to Candy, Claudia, Shelly, Nelda, and Debby. And
to my Grandkids, nieces, nephews, friends, for working and
serving the meals. If I have missed someone, let me say that
everyone was great, and thank you all.
Elders' Will Workshop
Have you been thinking about writing your will,
but have just been too busy to get to it? Have you stopped
part way through because you were not sure of the correct
legal terms? You now have a chance to write your will with
the information you receive from a leading expert with over
25 years experience. George Rives, a lawyer of Stoel,
Rives, Boley in Portland, will be at the Elders' Mealsite
Tuesday, September 8, 1992, at 1:00 p.m. to explain and
answer questions about the basics of writing your will. All
tribal members are welcome.
Spirit Mountain Development
Corporation Hires General
Manager Beth Oliver
A recent arrival in the Grand Ronde community
is Beth Oliver, the new General Manager of Spirit Mountain
Development Corporation. Beth has just returned to the
United States after spending seven years in Africa, working
with countries, .tribes, and groups to enhance their economic
development opportunities. From the civil war in
Mozambique to the Kalahari dessert, she has worked to
assist peoples in getting a new lease on life for themselves
and their families. She looks forward to the challenge of
broadening the base of tribal enterprises to help provide
employment and economic diversity.
Her experience reads like a book. She started the
first retail toy store in Vail, Colorado which is still in
existence. For many years she was a commercial pilot,
selling airplanes for Beech Aircraft Corporation and running
her own fixed base operation in Louisville, Mississippi. At
the Denver Zoo in Colorado she was a veterinary assistant,
and the reptile lady who visited the schools, hospitals, and
nursing homes with her charges. She worked for the
Boulder, Colorado police department as a hit and run
accident investigator. While doing research in the jungles
of Brazil, she became an honorary member of theTapirape
Indian Tribe for the work the tribe felt she had done in their
behalf.
Beth is the mother of six grown children and
grandmother to one. She and her husband, Barry, live in
Salem and are glad to be here.

Tribal Tourism Meeting
On Thursday, September 17, 1992, at 6:30 p.m.
there will be a meeting in the Community Center to
discuss tourism. The purpose of this meeting will be to
discuss the ideas of tribal members and the areas of
concern in regard to:
How will tourism affect our Tribe?
How will the Tribe pursue tourism?
What will be the Tribe's role in tourism?
What are the obstacles to tourism development in the
area?
Specific ideas for tourism.
Tourism can be an important opportunity for
the Tribe's economic development, and we would like
to have as much input as possible from all tribal
members on this subject. The ideas and concerns
presented in this meeting could affect the direction the
Tribe will take in the future.
The meeting is being sponsored by Spirit
Mountain Development Corporation. For those of you
who don't know about the corporat ion, it is a corporation
that has been charged with the development and
management of tribal enterprises. This would include
future business ventures that the Tribe as a whole may
wish to pursue, but does not include assisting in the
entrepreneurial business efforts of individual tribal
members. Beth Oliver is the General Manager of
SM DC. She operates under the guidance of a Board of
Directors, made up of five people.
Feedback about tourism from tribal members
is important to SMDC. Please come and share your
ideas and concerns regarding tourism at this meeting.
If you have any questions feel free to contact either Beth
Oliver or Chris Leno at SMDC, 1-800-422-0232.
A Special Surprise
I thought surprises came in small packages,
but I got the biggest one of all time. My family had our
Lafferty Family Reunion at the Pow-wow. All my
sisters and brothers, nieces, nephews were there. I
thank my sisters Dorothy, Margaret, Genevieve, and
Juanita. I thank my brothers Gerald and Kenneth. I
love you all.
