TRIBAL COUNCIL CANDIDATES
WILMADENE BUTLER
Hello- my name is Wilmadene Butler, and my parents
were the late Andrew and Amanda Riggs. I had several
sisters and brothers, all born in Grand Ronde. I have
one sister left, Emma Summerlin, who lives in
Tumwater, Washington.
On November 11, 1954, 1 married James E. Butler in
Vancouver, Washington. We have one daughter,
Cynthia Ann Butler, and we have lived in Monmouth,
Oregon for the past seven years.
I served on the Tribal Council in 1989-90, and I was also
secretary to the Cemetery Committee. Now I am on the
PowWow Committee, and it is an enjoyment working
with everyone.
I have helped plan many things, and now we have our
first Community Center on our land. It is a great feeling
knowing I was a part of all this. If I am elected, all I can
say is that I will do my best for my people. I love
cooking, canning, crocheting, and crafts.
Thank you,
Wilmadene Butler

VALARENE GROUT
Dear Tribal Members:
My name is Val Grout and I am running for Tribal
Council, and I would like to ask you for your support.
A little about my background: My parents are Dewalt
and Arvella Houck. My grandparents were Abe and
Maude Hudson and John and Frances Houck Porter.
My husband Pete, and my five children support me in
my council role.
One of my main concerns is the health of wellness of
our people. I was on the Health Committee for some
time and I try to stay in touch with all health issues.
Education and jobs for our people are also very
important to me,
I have been active on the PowWow Committee since
1984-cooking the meals and I have been on the
Cemetery Committee for three years. I now have been
on the Tribal Council for five years, and have always
kept all of our people in mind when I make any
decisions. I am a voice that is there for you and if you
have any questions or concerns, I am always willing
to listen and do my best to find the answers for you.
I feel there are some major decisions to be made in
1992-93 on housing, economic development, and land
purchasing. I feel I have the experience from being a
council member to make decisions that will be fair to
all tribal members. Thank you for your support in the
past, and I hope I can count on it for this election.

KATHRYN HARRISON
Dear Tribal Members:
It has been an honor and a privilege being elected to
serve on the council. Those who know me know of the
many hours spent this year in representing our tribe.
There were many ups and downs along with the hard
work and decisions made, but I attended every meeting
and activity with pride and dignity.
We have accomplished so much, so fast, but we still
have a long road to travel. I know I can help, and be of
assistance in carrying out the visions of our people, as
planned. I ask for your support so I may continue as a
member of Tribal Council. My thanks to everyone for
your trust and faith in re-electing me so we may
continue our work together.
May God Bless Kathryn Harrison

ANDREW JENNESS
I would like to begin by telling you a little about myself.
I am 26 years old, married, and have three beautiful
daughters. After being raised in the Eugene area, I
graduated from high school in 1984, worked a couple of
years in the woods, and returned to go to school at the
University of Oregon. While there I received my
Bachelors of Science degree in EconomicsBusiness in
1990. Shortly after that I worked for the tribe's
Economic Development department for a brief time
on the Overall Economic Development Plan. Since
that time I have been working on my own start-up
business, an elderly housing project in the Eugene area.
This brings me to why I am running for Tribal Council.
Proverbs 29:18 says "without a vision, people perish".
The vision for our tribe needs to be renewed and made
known. Our people need an understanding an a say in
where the tribe is headed. In the Res Plan a number of
goals were vaguely defined by council. They included
such issues as education, economic development, health
care, housing, and others. The vision including these
issues needs to be expanded.
Also, the people, those living in the Grand Ronde area
as well as those living outside the community, need to be
heard. There are tribal members who have needs that
are not currently being met. Those needs range from
health care to what kinds of services are available. I will
be an ear and a voice for the tribal membership as a
whole.
I am confidant that my educational background as well
as my business background has given me the ability to
review, analyze, and make informed decisions regarding
the well-being of the tribe and its members.
Thank you,
Andrew Jenness

EARL FLOYD "BUTCH" LABONTE
Family: Joseph LaBonte, Father; Thelma Metcalf
LaBonte, Mother.
I am running for Tribal Council. I would like the
opportunity serve my people. I feel there are a great
many needs that the members of the Grand Ronde tribe
have and I would like to do all that I can to help.
I have seen many of our tribal members have to leave
the Grand Ronde area because there is no housing or
employment. I will work to help the tribe acquire land
and provide housing and jobs for our people.
The Grand Ronde tribe has a great deal of potential in
the area of economic development. The other tribes are
working through such enterprises as bingo and other
tourist attractions to bring in employment. Grand
Ronde is a great location and has the hardest working
people around. There is no reason why we can't put
together our own business and put our people to work.
I am currently serving on the Veteran's and Community
Health Councils, and I am on the Alcohol and Drug
Alumni Committee. I am a hard worker and dedicated
to serving the Indian Community. I find work with
tribal government very rewarding.
The tribe has a proud heritage. I will work to help bring
the culture back for our people, protect our resources,
and advocate for tribal member's concerns.
The tribe must start addressing the needs of the youth.
I will help to get a recreation center where our youth
will have activities all year round. I will work to see to it
