Peggy Brickell, Willie Mercier, Crystal
Tonihka, Camille VanVleet, and
Celeste Wolf Attended the UNITY
conference in St. Paul, Minnasota.
"I made friends not only with
people from all over the U.S., but
with people from my own
community." said Willie Mercier.
The theme of the conference was
"Discovering our Common
Ground". Conference lectures and
discussions centered around
environmental issues, and how
Native American youths can be
leaders in their community.
Leadership skills and self-esteem
were enhanced by the conference
activities. Said Crystal Tonihka, "I
believe common ground is where
all native people come to be as
one in our Indian population. I
learned about myself. I found out
I was not alone. I, as all Native
American youths, have problems
in dealing with people who don't
understand our culture.."
United National Indian Tribal
Youth (UNITY) holds a
conference every year for Native
American young people. The fund
raising wheels are already in
motion for next year's conference.
All four participants in the
conference said they were glad to
have had the opportunity to go,
and that it was a valuable
experience.
