During the past two years a group of
Corvallis area artists and historians, with
the help of tribal consultants, developed
a contemporary artistic statement based
on the Kalapuya's Tcha Teemanwi

performance piece that told the story of
the "great flood and how the people got

their excitement for the Kalapuya
culture along with the performance
masks, now stored at the Benton County
Historical Museum, with area students.
On May 16, at the Grand Ronde
Elementary School there will be a
performance of the Tcha Teemanwi
myth at noon.
The play is based on a contemporary
version of the ancient story which had its
roots at the end of the last Ice Age. The
play enacts the myth that is one explana
tion for a series of floods that blanketed
the Willamette Valley with 800 feet of
ice and water. The animals ran for
safety up to the tallest mountain, better
known as Mary's Peak.
x Don't miss this golden opportunity to
witness a piece of the past.
