EDUCATION TRUST FUND SCHOLAR
SHIP PROGRAM PROVIDES SUPPORT
The Confederated Tribes of Grand
Ronde EDUCATION TRUST FUND
SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM is
designed to recognize and provide
financial support for students with '
demonstrated scholastic ability to seek
Higher Education and Adult Vocational
Training Programs. Priority fields of
study are: Law, Education, Medicine,
Health Careers and Administration,
Forestry, Natural Resource Manage
ment, and Business Administration.
The SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM is
open to all tribal members, regardless of
residence or age. It is not based on
income or need.
The intent of the SCHOLARSHIP
PROGRAM is to encourage members
towards growth in achieving self
sufficiency through education and
vocational training. Through the efforts
and services provided by the program,
the tribe hopes to achieve continued
longevity of future resources and
leadership.
The tribe's Education Committee and
a Special Selection Committee will
screen, select and rank applications for
final approval. All applications for the
Education Trust Fund Scholarship
Awards, are based primarily on scholas
tic achievement. Other factors such as;
leadership abilities, educational and
personal goals, and programs of study,
will also be taken into consideration.
The Committee determines the merit of
each application, and will also require a
personal interview with each applicant.
Students must currently be accepted
into, or enrolled in, a nationally or
regionally accredited institution of
higher education or vocational training.
Students must plan to attend school on
a full-time. Recipients of scholarships
will continue to receive financial
assistance, as long as they meet aca
demic criteria established by the
Education Committee.
Scholarship funds, which will be
disbursed through the recipients school
may be used for registration, tuition,
books, room and board, tools, or other
expenses related to education or
training programs. The Scholarship
Funds are not designed to cover 100
of total expenses. Students are strongly
encouraged to apply for all Financial
Aid, and other resources. All scholar
ships will be awarded on a per Quarter
or Semester basis, dependent upon the
institutions system.
Recipients of scholarships are re
quired to mail to the Education Pro
gram a report of grades and courses at
the end of each academic period. The
report must be "official."
Undergraduate scholarships are
renewable up to 4 years, and graduate
scholarships are renewable up to two
years. At the conclusion of this time
period, a review will be conducted for
additional assistance.
All recipients must sign a "release of
information" at time of application.

Drunken driver's bad luck turns into sobriety
To tribal members: This article shows
one of the many ways in which people
realize that alcoholism is a disease. This
disease can affect all parts of human life.

Dear Ann Landers: I am a drunk
driver. Late one night last September, a
police officer saw me run two red lights.
She pulled me over to the side of a busy
street and arrested me for driving while
intoxicated. .
I had never been arrested before. I
had never seen the inside of a pickup or
been fingerprinted. I felt degraded and
humiliated. It was awful. I could only
think that this stupid policewoman had
no business hassling a respectable
person like me.
I am writing this letter to publicly
thank her for possibly saving my life and
preventing me from hurting or killing
others. -
In accordance with Connecticut law,
my driver's license has been suspended
for 90 days. I can't drive to work. I can't
drive to do my marketing. I can't drive
anywhere. And I can't stop thinking
about all the other times I pulled up to
my favorite bar, tanked up on premium
beer, and then became the self-designated
driver from hell.
Many times I don't remember how I
got home. I can't figure out why I was
never arrested before. Some might say
may luck finally ran out. Actually, my
good fortune is just beginning. After
several months of sobriety, I am think
ing more clearly and acting more
responsibly than I ever have in my entire
life.
I'm taking it one day at a time. I now
know that alcoholism is a powerful
disease. Its deadliest syptom is denial. I
had no idea I was an alcoholic. Mem
bers of my family still are confused by
my former behavior. Even though they
saw me when I was loaded, it never
occurred to them that I had a serious
problem. - .
Continuous recovery means I won't be
drinking an alcoholic beverage for the
rest of my life. The thought of never
drinking again scares me, but the
thought of EVER drinking again
terrifies me. So I will continue to get
help. I now have the strength and clarity
of mind to ask for it. -Windsor, Conn.
