Lewis Riggs dies at 71
Tribal member Lewis L Riggs died on
Feb. 11, 1992 at the age of 71 due to
pneumonia. He was born in Willamina
on May 24, 1920.
A veteran of World War II, Lewis
Riggs served in the Navy on the U.S.S.
Wasp during 1943-45.
The family of Lewis Riggs would like
to express their heartfelt gratitude to
Father Crunican for his words of
enlightenment, to Mark Mercier for
delivering the eulogy, and to the people
who prepared the food for the luncheon
after the funeral.
Lewis L. Riggs was survived by his
wife of more than 52 years, Doris
(LaRose) Riggs, his daughters; Frances
Byars, Louise Caulson, Georgine Gray,
Euna Birchum and his sons; Lewis L.
Riggs HI, and David Riggs, and his
sister Verna Larsen from Grand Ronde.
Funeral services were held on Feb. 17,
at St. Michael's Church in Grand
Ronde.

The Northwest Indian Veteran's
Association (NIVA) held a meeting
on March 5, 1992 in the tribal council
chambers.
We will contact the NIVA Chapter
of PortlandVancouver to see if we
can assist them with the fund-raiser
for "The Wall" trip to Washington
D.C. in November.
Our flags are all done and we will
be carrying them at powwows and
other events to represent our tribe.
We are going to the 1st annual
everyone aware of, is that we are trying
to locate all tribal member veterans. If
you are a veteran or know of a tribal
veteran, please let us know. You can call

Program and Services
WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
Tribal members who are applicants or recipients of AFDC assistance and
reside in the tribal six county service area. The service area includes the
counties of Tillamook, Washington, Multnomah, Yamhill, Polk and Marion.
HOW DO YOU RECOME A PARTICIPANT IN THE
GRAND RONDE TRIBAL JOBS PROGRAM?
-Tell your AFDC caseworker that you are a member of the Confederated
Tribes of the Grand Ronde.
-Your caseworker will notify the Grand Ronde Tribal JOBS Program.
-The Tribal JOBS coordinator will then contact you for an initial intake to
determine if you are eligible for services.
-If you are determined to be eligible for services, you will De asKea to partici
pate in a comprehensive assessment to determine your skills and needs. An
Employment Plan will be developed and implemented to work towards getting
you, and eligible family members, employed and to become sen-sunicieni.
-Support services will be provided as necessary and in accordance with pro
gram guidelines.
JOBS PROGRAM COMPONENTS
The Tribal JOBS Program will assist you in getting the following types of help:
Education Assistance:
a) High School Education or High School Equivalency
b) Basic and remedial education to provide individuals with a basic
literacy level.
c) Education in English proficiency.
Job Skills Training:
-Vocational Training -
Job Readiness Activities:
-Activities geared to prepare the participant for workplace expectations.
Job Development and Job Placement Activities:
a) Identifying and locating labor market opportunities.
b) Marketing participants
c) Securing a job
COORDINATION
State of Oregon (Title 1V-A Agency)
-The Adult and Family Services Division is responsible for support services for
child care while you are a participant in the Tribal JOBS Progam.
Grand Ronde Tribal JOBS Program
-The Tribal JOBS Program will provide coordination and referral with other
appropriate agencies, such as the JTPA agency and Tribal Education Program.
-JTPA Agency referral may include:
a) Job search assistance
b )Classroom training programs
c) Work experience program activities
d) On the job training
-Tribal Education Program referrals may include:
a) Johnson O'Malley ,
b) Adult Vocational Training
c) Higher Education
d) Adult Education
-Other Agencies as appropriate.
