Veterans Update
by Lydia Mathena
The Northwest Indian Veterans Association (NTVA)
chapter of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde
held a meeting on February 6, 1992, in the programs
building meeting room.
Jackie Grape talked to the group about disabled
veterans benefits. Virgil Hockett answered questions
concerning all veterans benefits.
I believe more and more of our tribal veterans are
finding out about our group, and the help that is avail
able to them. Remember, any non-tribal member
veteran whom you know is welcome to join our group as
an Associate Member.
Some of our group members attended the Mid-Winter
Conference of the Affiliated Tribes of the Northwest
Indians, Powwow. The meeting was held at the Red
Lion Lloyd Center in Portland, Ore. on February 11,
1992.
Mark your calendar for our meeting on March 5, 1992
at 6:30 p.m. in the tribal council chambers.
If you have any questions concerning veterans benefits,
contact Mike Larsen or Lydia Mathena at the tribal
office during regular business hours; 8:00 a.m. to 5:00
p.m. at 1-800-422-0232. "

Economic Development Department
offers Tourism course
By Cathy Cline, Editor
The Economic Development Department is planning
to offer a basic tourism course through Chemeketa
College, here in Grand Ronde, for the Spring 1992 term.
Being aware of the trends and issues surrounding the
tourism industry is encouraged for tribal members
interested in the business since tourism is a major
priority for the tribe, according to Shelley Hanson from
the Economic Development Department.
The tourism course is a three credit hour course. There
is also the possibility of receiving financial assistance
through the Adult Education program. The class will be
on Monday nights from 7-10 p.m. and the first class will
be on March 30th.
Please contact Shelley Hanson at 879-5211 by mid
March if interested in attending the class since it will not
be offered unless at least 10 people sign up.

"Chee Mamook" Project Training
by Mike Larsen
The first meeting of the Community Health Council
was held Saturday February 15, 1992 at the Grand
Ronde Elementary School cafeteria.
I introduced myself to the group and explained the
Community Decision Making (EDM) process which
we'll be using on this project.
Jeff Butler of Mountain States Health Corporation was
our trainer for this session.
The training consisted of a warm up exercise to get to
know each other, interviewing and effective listening
skills, leadership and working with groups, and problem
solving.
Cheryle Kennedy, the Tribal Health Director also gave
us a report on Health Care at Grand Ronde. She told
us about the importance of paperwork.
I think that we had a very good training session. Also,
I think this group of people is very ambitious and
committed to doing a good job for our tribal community.
Once again, I ask that each of you offer any information
or suggestions that you can.
We will have another meeting of the Community
Health Council for more training. Then, we will form
focus groups for all of the designated sectors of the
tribal community.
I would like to encourage all of you to participate in
any way that you can. We will be forming our focus
groups soon and hope to see you actively taking part in
them. Here is the list of Community Health Council
members:
Richard Ray, Gene Davidson, Floyd
"Butch" Labonte, Teresa Bailey,
Jeanne Larsen, Joann Empey, Ray
McKnight, Diana Stogsdill, Tamera
Kennedy, Shelley Hanson, Darrel
Mercier, Jeff Mercier, Darlene Aaron,
Reynold Leno, and Ken Schmid.
Remember any information you have is needed.
Thank you for your time.
