Tourism projects a priority for the Economic Development Department
A tribal museumcultural center, a campgroundRV
park, and a full service restaurantlounge topped the list
of tourism development projects at an Economic
Development meeting held Jan. 6, 1992.
Ten tribal members met with Shelley Hanson, the
tribal EconomicBusiness Program Specialist, Alan
Kluge and Ed Knudson, private consultants. The
meeting was held at the Tribal Forestry Office, and
participants discussed the tribal tourism development
process.
Along with the top three priority tourism projects were
many other ideas such as: an art gallery, a historical play
using tribal members in the presentation, a mini-mall, a
sports complex, a teepee village in the RV park, recre
ation facilities (volleyball, horseshoes, swimming pool,
racquetball courts, etc.), and a traditional longhouse and
sweatlodge.
"The purpose of the meeting was to get feedback on
projects being proposed by the Economic Development
Department (EDD). Discussion centered on which of
the proposed projects are high priorities, what about the
projects members have concerns with, and what is the
overall view of tourism as a development strategy,"
Shelley said.
Tourism is viewed by the EDD as an excellent vehicle
to provide jobs, job training programs, and business
opportunities for Grand Ronde tribal members. "The
main concerns with tourism development that surfaced
were regarding alcohol sales and service on the reserva
tion," Shelley said. "Participants felt that as a tribe, we
do not want to encourage alcohol use and abuse within
our tribal comunity nor do we want to give tribal youth
the perception that we encourage alcohol use in order
for the tribe to make money."
Ideas presented at the meeting will be considered as
the department plans for tourism development. It is
important that future projects reflect the values of the
Grand Ronde Tribe and its people. EDD welcomes
your comments about tourism development in Grand
Ronde. Please send written comments to:
