c 0 THE CONFEDERATED TRIBES OF THE GRAND RONDE COMMUNITY OF OREGON r NOVEMBER 1991 EDUCATION PROGRAM TO HOST COLLEGE BREAKFAST High school students, parents and Tribal members who are considering attending two year or four year college degree programs, are invited to attend the second PREPARING FOR COLLEGE workshop, to be held on November 15, 1991. College representatives attending: -Oregon State University - Education Opportunities Program University of Oregon Multicultural Affairs Office -Eastern Oregon State College - Native American Program -Portland Community College Teacher Education Program If you are interested in learning more about specific programs, colleges and universities, please plan to attend. Parents are especially encouraged to a attend. The representatives will provide information on what high school students can start doing in order to prepare for a smooth entry into school. The workshop will be held at the CHURCH OF THE NAZARENE, in Grand Ronde, from 9:00 am to 12:00. , The program will sponsor breakfast. ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT NEWS ARTS & CRAFTS UPDATE Monday October 14, 1991 Meridith Stanton of the Indian Arts and Crafts Board visited Grand Ronde to learn about Tribal artisans in this area. Their organiza tion runs three native american museums across the country who's gift shops sell indian arts and crafts. They also coordinate marketing and promotion efforts for native american artists. She has sent us several publica tions about marketing crafts - "The Law in Plain English for Crafts-People", "The Crafts Business Encyclopedia", and "The Cooperative Approach to Crafts". If you are interested in looking over these publications, stop by the Economic Development office. She is also interested in contacting Grand Ronde tribal artisans for future gallery exhibits. She will be coming back to our area within the next year, so watch for an evening get together to show off your projects. If you arc interested in sharing work with her before she has a chance to visit, send a photograph or photographs of your work to Shelley Hanson, Economic Development Department, 9615 Grand Ronde Road, Grand Ronde, OR., 97347. Be sure to mark each photo with your name, address and phone number so that she will be able to contact you. Another opportunity for Grand Ronde artists is an apprenticeship program to train indians in traditional arts and crafts. As soon as more information is avail able on the program it will be passed on in the newslet ter. Ready to sell? We have a tribal member in Michigan with a retail outlet looking for Grand Ronde arts and crafts to sell. If you arc interested in selling to them, send a picture(s) of your work. The pictures will be forwarded on to them with your name, address and phone number so that they can contact you. BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT RESOURCES The Tribal Economic Development Department has a variety of resources available to tribal members. Our magazine collection includes: Newsweek, Business Week, Entrepreneur, Fortune, and Oregon Business among others. If you are interested in starting a business and need information about your industry, business structure choices, or another aspect of business planning, give us a call to find out what resources we have available. ONABEN (Oregon Native American Entrepreneurial Network), is sponsoring a business development "green house" course starting Tuesday October 29th. The class will meet every Tuesday for 20 weeks, and will assist participants in completing a business plan will be used to secure financing as well as to provide insight into every aspect of your business, the market you arc selling to, your target market or customers, your business' legal structure, etc. If you are interested in this course, the cost is $100 to Grand Ronde, Klamath, Warm Springs, and Silctz tribal members and $500 for others.
