EDUCATION UPDATE
The month of September has shown us several faces!
One face indicates an increased number of students in
both the HIGHER EDUCATION and ADULT
VOCATIONAL TRAINING Programs for the 1991
1992 school year. Another face tells us we are facing an
increase of another kind, that of dealing with the
increased TUITION & FEES for Oregon colleges and
universities.
While staring at September's faces, the Tribe has taken
steps to address educational costs for all students during
the current academic year. We've had to limit the size
of Tribal grant awards and for the 1992-1993 school
year, we may move toward setting a limit on the number
of students to be enrolled in both programs.
Beginning the 1991-1992 school year, we offer our
encouragement to all students for a good year. These
students are participating in the following programs and
schools:

FAMILY MATH & SCIENCE
CLASSES TO BEGIN
During the 1990-1991 school year the Tribal Adult
Education Program and the JOM Program sponsored
FAMILY MATH & SCIENCE classes for parents and
children in the K - 8th grade levels. The average
attendance per each class was 30-32 participants.
Activities conducted involved math games, toothpick
puzzles, popcorn experiments, making a spider web,
building a paper tower, symmetry & art, sugar dissolv
ing, and incorporating Indian art, stories & games in
science activities.
If you did not attend any of the classes, you missed out
on a FUN TIME! All the activities are easy to learn,
hands-on, and inexpensive to make.
This year we are scheduling classes for the third
TUESDAY of the month. Fall classes will be conducted
on:
October 15th, 1991
November 19th, 1991
December 17th, 1991.
All classes will be held at the Grand Ronde Church of
the Nazarene's community hall, 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm .
For the 1991-1992 classes we will be asking parents to
agree to attend classes and participate with their
children. Last year we ran into a little difficulty with
parents just dropping off their children. The classes are
designed to help both parents and children work on
science and math activities together!. We need more
parent volunteers, no experience necessary and YES, we
are willing to TRAIN!.
You don't have to be a math or science genius, come
join us and attend Family Math & Science classes.
Remember, MATH & SCIENCE ARE FUN!
fTIOH SCHOOL STUDENTS
& PARENTS
On November 15, 1991 the Tribal Higher Education
Program will be hosting a "PREPARING FOR COL
LEGE WORKSHOP" high school students and parents.
If you are considering attending college during the 1992
1993 school year, you may wish to join us. Several four

be on hand to discuss topics such as :

How to Pay for College?
Additional information will be provided regarding
majors and programs of study. Parents are especially
encouraged to attend and
bring your questions.
