si Smoke Signals September 1991 Page 3 VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT The Alcohol and Drug Prevention Program sponsored the first annual volleyball tournament as an alternative sober activity. Trophies were given for 1st and 2nd places, a 3rd prize ribbon was also given. The AD Prevention Program has plans to continue this activity each year on the Saturday of the annual Pow-Wow. We are currently researching the cost and probability of having a volleyball sand pit close to the Community Center for next years tournament. Cost will remain the same at $2.50 per person, $10.00 per team. To improve the tournament for the following years, we would like to work with the Pow-Wow Coordinators and M.Gs to announce the tournament and winners. We would also like to have the tournament more organized, as far as deadlines to sign up and fees due to deadlines, and more publicity of the tournament. Any positive comments to improve the tournament is welcomed. 1st place went to: JackieWhisler, Jim Willis , Greg Leno, Dusty Herber. 2nd place went to: Mary Brickell, Teri Hosclaw, Cory Meneley, Jeff Nepstad. 3rd place went to: Dean Azule, Kelly Herber, Melanie Smith, Steve Samples Congratulation to the winning teams and thank you to all who participated. Proceeds went to help fund t-shirts for tribal youth. By Camille Van Vleet SOBER DANCE On August 16, 1991 the Alcohol and Drug Prevention Program sponsored a Sober Dance. The dance was t chosen on this date of the Pow-Wow to provide a sober activity for persons of all ages, focusing on youth. There were no problems occurring during the dance at all. The Alcohol and Drug staff were present to chaperon. There were also four others who were hired to watch doors and alarms. No fights broke out or any other negative misbehaving during the dance and no fire alarms were set off. Approximately 150 persons did show up and appeared to have a good time. Persons of all ages, Indian and non-Indian attended the Sober Dance. The janitor of the grade school was present before, during and after the dance, he assured the staff that the clean-up and all else went well. Although there was a $1.00 donation for the dance, it was not manda tory to pay to enter the dance. The AD staff feel that the Sober Dance is an important alternative activity and have every intention of continuing to sponsor the Sober Dance on each Friday of the Annual Pow-Wow. We also feel that if the Sober Dance was not an activity during Pow-Wow, there may have been many persons, including youth, that may have engaged in other activi ties that could have created an unhealthy environment and reflect poorly on the Pow-Wow festivities. It is understood that the Pow-Wow will be held on Tribal Pow-Wow grounds in August 1992. The dance will be facilitated in one of two choices, the Community Center or the Grand Ronde Elementary School again. The Pow-Wow Committee was very cooperative and helpful in planning the Sober Dance this year. We hope that this cooperative and supportive working relation ship will continue throughout many Pow-Wow years to come.
