PEYOTE PERMITTED
IN OREGON
SALEM, Ore. Gov. Barbara Roberts has signed into
law a measure to permit the sacramental use of peyote
by American Indians.
"This is not a drug issue. This is a freedom of religion
issue," Gov. Roberts said.
At the June 24 bill-signing were Alfred Smith and
Galen Black, who were fired in 1982 as county drug
counselors for using the illegal hallucinogen in Indian
ceremonies. The state moved to deny them unemploy
ment compensation and the case went to the U.S.
Supreme Court which ruled in the state's favor last year.
The law does not flatly legalize peyote, but provides a
defense against drug charges for people who use peyote
in religious rituals.
