Smoke Signals May 1991 page 3 Chairman's Report(cont) value changes over the twenty year period. Last year Yamhill County Commissioners received a check of $20,000. as a one time final payment for any losses the county would suffer from the creation of the Reservation. On March 27, 1991 Tillamook County Commissioners accepted a check from Tribal Chairman, Mark Mercier. of $90,000. to settle forever any revenue losses the county may have suffered from the creation of the Reservation. This action closes another small chapter in the history of the rebirth of the Tribal community and the develop ment of the Grand Rondc Reservation. Timber Salvage Sales (Contract Purchases) The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde is accepting applications for future Timber Salvage Sales on the Reservation. ANNOUNCEMENT f The Tribal Forestry Department is reminding all visitors entering the Reservation via the Agency Access Road to be extra cautious. Of special concern is the amount of log truck traffic which will be hauling out Agency Creek Road this summer. Many cutting units are already in progress and over the last month there has been a dramatic increase in log truck traffic. Visi tors are advised to wear their seatbelts and drive slow especially when going around curves. A citizens band radio tuned to channel number 17 may be helpful, since most log truck drivers announce their progress as they come in and out of the Reservation. When approaching a log truck pull off of the road and let them by. Loaded log trucks do not stop as fast as a passenger vehicle. We do not want to discourage you from visiting the Reserva tion during the scenic summer months, but we do want everyone to have a safe and enjoyable summer. 0: 90 Tribal Veteran's Meeting . There are two parts to the survey. The first part is to identify Tribal membership needs in regards to health care, housing, and education and to update our demographic information. The second part to be mailed separate from the first, includes survey information for the Economic Develop ment Department and the Tribal Health Department. It includes an assessment to identify Tribal member skill areas. This information will be utilized by the Economic Development Department to identify potential employ ment opportunities and to help plan Tribal employment and business opportunities for members in the greatest skill areas. This part of the survey will go to approximately 600 of the 1000 households mailed the first part of the survey. The survey is being coordinated by the Center for Population Research and Census at Portland State University, however, all information will be turned over to the Tribe's Enrollment Office at completion.
