Smoke Signals April 1991 Education News Career k Higher Education Awareness Workshop April 5, 1991 At Willamette University in Salem, Oregon You are invited to attend a career and higher educa tion workshop to be held on Friday, April 5, 1991 on the Willamette University campus in the Putnam Center, Salem, Oregon. Workshop times are 9:00 am to 3:30 pm. The workshop is being sponsored by the Coalition for Post Secondary Education - Oregon Indian Education Association, Willamette University - Multi-cultural Affairs, Confederated Tribes of Siletz - Salem Area Office and the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde's Education Programs. Johnson O'Malley Program By Barbara Steere JOM Coordinator On February 15, 1991 two high school students, Mario George, Valarie Pedersen, and I attended the First Annual Health Careers Conference at Chemeketa Community College in Salem where all minority students were invited for the day. The purpose of the conference was to provide high School students with the opportunity to meet and talk with health professionals representing many fields in medicine as well as health support programs. Financial aide and scholarship information from Oregon Colleges and Universities that have Pre-Med. programs was also available. Representatives from Oregon Health Science University, Chemeketa Community College, Western Oregon State College, Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, and Salude Medical Clinic handed out informa tion to the students and asked them to think really hard about any of the health careers. Oregon Health Sciences University Minority High School Student Research Apprenticeship Program Summer 1991 This is an opportunity for minority high school students to participate in health related research at OHSU School of Medicine and School of Dentistry and to widen their awareness of career choices. Students will be able to earn up to $2,000 at the rate of $4.75 per hour. To apply submit: 1. A letter describing your career goals and why you wish to participate in the program. 2. A copy of current high school transcript. 3. At least one letter of recommendation from a science teacher. Minority students are defined as African-American, Hispanic, American Indian or Alaskan Native, Pacific Islander, or Asian. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or have permanent visas. Two parents that are actively working with Dean and Barbara in the Family Math & Science classes that take place every third Tuesday of the month will be attending this class. Karen Lord and Colleen Kimsey are Tribal members and work for the Tribe. Then in June there will be a Family Science class taking place in Portland. I rf:: i ' f ' ,3 Education program director Dean Azule Oregon Health Sciences University High School Teacher Research Opportunity Summer 1991 The Minority High School student research Apprentice Program,, operated for the past 10 years at OHSU, has been expanded to include a high school teacher initia tive. This program extension will allow two teachers to participate in a hands-on summer research project in OHSU laboratories in order to update their knowledge and skills in modern research tools and techniques. Eligibility: Science teachers who are members of ' minority groups, or who teach a significant number of minority students. Goak Strengthen teaching skills through hands-on research experience. Encourage teachers to stimulate students to pursue scientific careers. Establish links between science teachers and biomedical researchers. Financial Support Up to $5,000 maximum will be pro vided for the summer.
