Mar 91 Nanitch Sahallie Employee of the Month Featured on page 9. a www j THE CONFEDERATED TRIBES OF THE GRAND RONDE COMMUNITY OF OREGON ft MARCH 1991 Attention: Grand Ronde and j Surrounding Communities The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde with cooperative efforts of other members of the Grand Ronde and Willamina communities has formed an Oregon TOGETHER! Board. The Oregon TO GETHER! Board is a community based prevention board comprised of key leaders and other community members. The Board's long term goals are to reduce substance abuseuse in our community. However, there are many steps that need to be taken before that goal is obtainable. The Oregon TOGETHER Board's mission is to utilize community cooperative efforts to aid in the reduction of adolescent substance abuse in the Grand Ronde and Willamina communities by focusing prevention efforts on the risk factors associated with substance abuse. The risk factors which usually appear in every community are divided into 4 categories. The first are those risk factors which focus around the community. These include economic and social depriva tion; low neighborhood attachment and community dis organization; transitions and mobility; community laws and norms favorable to toward drug use; and the availability of drugs in the community. Each of these risk factors are related to substance abuse in the community. The second category of risk factors is that of the family. These include having a family history of alcoholism; family management problems; and parental drug use and positive attitudes toward use. The next category involves the school and risk factors associated with it. Early antisocial behavior; academic failure; and a low commitment to school. All of those risk factors related to school puts youth at risk for usingabusing drugs. The fourth and final category of the risk factors are those related to the individual and peer risk factors. M :i. &-; ?::;;;v:v ft ''ft V 4 4 fc a M M STATE CHAMPION - Tribal member Shonn Leno defeated Ryan Henry 2-0 in the State 2A Wrestling Champion ships at Western Oregon State College in Monmouth. Leno, a sophomore at Willamina High, won the 106 lb. title. Tribal Member Wins State Wrestling Championship In the most exciting championship final of the State 2A Wrestling Tournament, Tribal member Shonn Leno pulled off a stunning victory over Dayton's Ryan Henry to win the 106 pound championship. Leno, a sophomore at Willamina High School, used a reversal with just :03 seconds left in the match to defeat Henry. Leno brought a 31-3 record into the championship final and Henry's record was an impressive 29-1 before losing to Leno. Two of Leno's three losses were to Henry earlier in the season. Henry defeated Leno 4-3 at the Oregon Classic and 2-1 just two weeks ago in the District championships. After the match Leno said that his victory hadn't really sunk in yet. " I just know that this a good feeling." During the match's final seconds Leno said he knew he could pull it off. "At the end of the match I just kept thinking 'State Championship.'" The tournament, held at Western Oregon State College in Monmouth, was the highlight of the season for this 15 year old grappler. His battles with Henry just made the season more memorable. "It's harder for both of us because we know each other so well." Congratulations Shonn! The Tribe is proud of your fine effort. I
