Address City, State & Zip Grand Ronde Exhibit Was Collected By Agent PORTLAND-Objects crafted at the turn of the century by Western Oregon Indians were on display recently for the first time at the Oregon Historical Center at 1230 S.W. Park Avenue in Portland. Most of the articles were created by members of the Grand Ronde Band and collected by Andrew Kershaw, who served for 20 years as agent and surgeon at the Grand Ronde Reservation located in the Grand Ronde River Valley in Polk and Yamhill Counties. Items in the exhibition included basketry, beadwork and artifacts from other Native American cultures which were collected by Kershaw when he served on other reservations. This was the first opportunity for the public to view the collection acquired by the Oregon Historical Society in 1989 from Kershaw's descendants. The Grand Ronde Tribe was terminated in 1954 but their Tribal status was restored in 1983. In preparing for the exhibit, Grand Ronde Tribal elders visited the Oregon Historical Center and were very generous with their knowledge of the reservation's history. Their memories were incorporated into the text, along with maps of the reservation and photos of Tribal life. According to Dale Archibald, chief curator of the historical society, it was hoped that the exhibit would generate greater understanding and appreciation of Native American history and culture.
