The First Orcgonians Today, a look at the urban
experience, tribal government, Indian education, tribal
and urban heritage programs, and economic-development
efforts;
In addition, a special workshop-Teaching About
Oregon Indians -will offer teachers perspectives .
resources, goals, and lesson plans. The workshop will be
led by Robin Buttcrfield of the Oregon Department of
Education's Indian Education Program, who will
introduce participants to a new curriculum model being
developed by the Oregon Department of Education.
Also paving tribute to the Indians of Oregon will be
Ada Deer, a Menominee Indian and director of the
Native American Studies Program at the University of
Wisconsin-Madison, and N. Scott Momaday, a Kiowa
Indian and Pulitzer Prize-winning poet who is currently
Regents Professor of English at the University of
Arizona.
Conference registration is $25 before September 30
and $30 thereafter and covers a lunch, dinner, continen
tal breakfast, and conference materials. A "Saturday
Only" fee of $5 is also available for people who are
unable to attend the Friday workshops but who wish to
attend repeat sessions on Saturday and to hear the
conference's concluding address by N. Scott Momaday.
The Oregon Council for the Humanities can arrange
home stays for native people who are unable to stay in
commercial accommodations.
