October 1990 page 4' American Indian Dance Theatre Arts Series opens at W.O.S.C. with Famous Indian Dancers MOUNMOUTH - At the sound of the "Spirit Mountain Drum" and the sight of a TeePee, the Edgar H. Smith Fine Arts Series will present a day of events, highlighting Native American Indians and the nationally acclaimed American Indian Dance Theatre. On Thursday, October 4th, 1990, Western Oregon State College's Rice Auditorium will be the site of two performances by the famous Indain dancers, two exhibits of Native American art, and a dispaly of Native American culture by members of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde. The dancers will give two performances at 2:30 p.m. and at 8:00 p.m. on the Rice mainstage. Reserved seat tickets are priced at $10.50 to $14.50 and group rates are available for the matinee performance only. Tickets are available from the Rice Box Office, open weekdays from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., telephone at (503) 838- 8462. They are also available from the Mid-Valley Arts Council in Salem and the Market Place in Monmouth, Oregon. The Indain Dance Theatre first performed in 1987 and has since traveled nationwide. All of the dances are authentic, derived from traditional dances of the earth, dances to summon the spirits, and dances of great skill and expression. The drum is used to accompany most dances, while music featured in the production include songs which can be traced back 600 years. Songs have not been written down, but are passed from generation to generation at celebrations and at Tribal gatherings.
