The 1990-91 school year will start for many school districts in Oregon during the first week of September, after the Labor Day weekend. If you are a senior intcnding6n graduating With yduf class; before 'you start celebrating, you'd better check with your counselor that you have earned enough "credits" and have met all State Competencies. During the last three years, the Tribal Adult Education Program has been hit with a number of "last minute" panic requests by students who learn around spring vacation, that they are lacking a 12 credit. Or, that they had failed a required course and had not re-taken the class with a successful completion. Much of these last minute, panic requests can be avoided by simply having a "credit check" completed at the start of your Senior year, or at the end of your Junior year in high school. If you are needing assistance in completing this process, contact your counselor. In some school districts, you may be fortunate enough to have a Title V Indian Education Program, or a Johnson O.Malley Program. You can contact these programs for assistance and they can help you find out any informa tion regarding your progress. It is your responsibility to know what you are needing to complete. Be sure you keep on top of things, and when in doubt be sure to ask, don't assume ! Enjoy the upcoming school year. The 1990-1991 State of Oregon Minority Achievement Winners Every year, since the Oregon Minority Achievement Scholarship Program was started, the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde has been fortunate in having a number of our graduating high school seniors compete for and be awarded a scholarship. This year is no different, we have two awardces! Our first award recipient is Ms. Angela Lcno, from the class of 1990 Willamina High School. Angic maintained a 3.98 grade point average, and she was a co-salutatorian. Ms. Lcno plans on majoring in Pre-Law at Western Oregon State College and eventually, she would like to attend Willamette University School of Law. Angic is the daughter of Reynold and Liz Lcno. Mr. Chadwick Stryker, is our other award recipient for Oregon Minority Achievement Scholarship distinction. Chad graduated from Glencoe High School in Hillsboro, where he maintained an accumulative Grade Point Average of a 3.80. Mr Stryker will attend Oregon State University and plans on majoring in Business Admini stration. Chad is the son of Ms. Bonnie Stryker. Both Angic and Chad were awarded the Oregon Minority Achievement Scholarships based on their academics and leadership ability. The scholarships are provided for up to 5 years and pay for total tuition and fees at a State College or University. Congratulations Angic and Chad, we are proud of your success ! Family Math and Family Science Classes Last year's highly successful Family Math and Family Science classes will be continued during the '90-91 school year. Classes will be held on September 25th, and October 23rd, from 5:30 to 6:30 pm. Classes will be held (tentative) at either the Grand Ronde Elementary School Library or the Grand Ronde Tribal Office. Don't forget, we will offer refreshments, just like last year ! Do you know how many hot dogs the average person in the U.S. eats in one year? Do you know how hot a lightning bolt is? How many feathers the average adult eagle has? Or, what about how many 12 oz bottles or cans of pop the average person in the U.S. drinks in one year? Come to Family Math and Family Science class and find out !!!
