Editor Attends Career Day
On May 9th, 1990, Hunting, Fishing and Newsletter
Coordinator Brent Merrill attended a "Career Carnival"
at Chief Leschi High School in Tacoma, Washington.
Merrill was invited to attend by Chief Leschi instructor
Cheryl Van Brocklin who hosted the event along with
her students.
The school's Career Day got under way with an
introduction from Peter Campbell of Eastern Washing
ton University. Campbell is in charge of Indian Studies
at the University. Campbell spoke to the students about
career and educational opportunities at his school and
others in the area.
Next, Carol Giboncy, assistant principal at Centralia
Middle School in Centralia, Washington talked about
the importance of finding an occupation in a field that
you really enjoy. She also took the time to share some
of her experiences as a teacher with the students.
Giboncy's presentation was lively and enjoyable.
After the introductions the students broke into two
groups and attended workshops on Health-related
careers and careers in the communications field. Along
with Merrill who talked about how to get into careers
in Photo-journalism other guest speakers included
Julie McCann from KOMO television and radio station
in Seattle, Washington and Rich Buscy who is a video
producer for Washington Natural Gas. Buscy showed a
video that he produced for the employees of his com
pany and also shared his experiences of getting into the
field of video production. McCann, who is in charge of
KOMO's personnel department, talked about the
increasing demand for Native Americans in the radio
and television industry. . .
VanBrocklin said that the school's Career Carnival was
a success, "It rdally went well. I think everybody was
really pleased with the Career Day. We got a lot of nice
compliments from the people who were there."

Are Your Students "Thinking
of Graduate School"
A matter of mounting national concern is the dwindling
number of United States citizens who plan to enter
graduate school to prepare themselves for careers in
science or engineering.
As one means of promoting interest in graduate school
for students in science and engineering fields, the
National Science Foundation has prepared a pamphlet
briefly describing its NSF Graduate Research Fellow
ship programs for distribution to college juniors and
seniors. Colleges and universities nationwide are being
asked to be partners in this effort by bringing these
fellowship opportunities to the attention of qualified stu
dents. Program Announcement brochures and application
materials for the 1991 NSF Graduate Research Fellow
ship competition will be available upon request in
September 1990 from the Fellowship Office, National
Research Council, 2101 Constitution Avenue, Washing
ton, D.C. 20418

Hello, my name is Jolcne Poole. I am Sr. Miss Grand
Ronde 1989-90. My Parents are Bruce and Annabell
Poole.
Since I was crowned in August, I have participated in
parades, Pow Wows and Tribal activities. I have met a
lot of people from all over and have learned more about
other Tribes.
I have really enjoyed representing my Tribe, it has
been an honor for me. It's been a lot of fun and I've
gotten to do a lot of traveling. It has been a great
experience all around for me.
I hope to see everyone at our next Annual Pow Wow in
August.
Thank you! Jolcne Poole, Sr. Miss Grand Ronde

Hello, my name is Molly Rimer and I am Jr. Miss
Grand Ronde 1989-90. 1 am very grateful that I have had
the opportunity to represent my Tribe. However, it has
been challenging. I would also like to say it has been fun
working with the three Jr. Miss Grand Ronde princesses
this year. I am very proud of all of them.
I would like to encourage more Tribal members to
start dancing this year.
I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone
for their support. Thank you! Molly Rimer, Jr. Miss
