SPECIAL PERSON
Angie Lcno, daughter of Rcyn and Liz Leno and
grand-daughter of Orvillc and Ramona Lcno and
Darlcnc Brown is graduating from Willamina High
School June 1, 1990. Angie has accomplished a lot
through her years at Willamina High, she has been very
active in all events and when asked to help she was
always willing to do her share and a little more. She had
a goal of graduating with a 4.0 GPA accumulative, she
did not quite make that goal but ended up with a 3.98
which means in 4 years of high school she received only
one B grade.
She was chosen salutatorian of her class and will make
a speech at graduation. Angie has done very well aca
demically and received several scholarships, one being
the Minority Scholarship, one from DAR, and another
one from 01 EA as well as others not heard from yet.
Angie is very ambitious, college is her next challenge.
She is at this time planning to attend Western Oregon
State College next year, her major is law. She was also
chosen 1990 Prom Queen at the high school prom which
was held at WOSC. She played softball and was very
active in her brothers' wrestling programs. She is also
very active with the Tribe, she has given speeches when
asked, she filmed leadership in youth, tutored at the
Middle School this year and helped students who
needed it. All in all, Angie is a very special person to a
lot of people, We're sure she will go far in life and reach
all or most of the goals she has set for herself. Good

Angie Leno
Leno tapped for Willamina
Graduation Honors
Aaron Mendenhall has been named valedictorian and
Angie Leno and Sara Thornhill co-salutatorians of the
class of 1990 at Willamina High School.
Lcno has been active in the Letter man's Club, Pep
Club, OSSOM, International Club and the tribal youth
group. She played varsity softball for three years.
Leno plans to attend Western Oregon State College at
Monmouth, where she will major in tribal law.

Matthew Lux
Lux Wins Contest
Tribal member Matthew Lux, the son of Fred and
Donna Lux and the Grandson of Arnold Houck, ,
recently traveled with his sister Amanda to Reno,
Nevada to attend the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation's
Annual Elk Camp and Convention.
Seven year-old Matthew competed in the Elk bugling
contest at the convention and placed 3rd overall in the
youth division of the annual event. Lux was also
honored with the 1st place prize for the "People's
Choice" award.
Matthew, who has been hunting with his dad since the
age of 2. is no stranger to the competition. Last year,
Lux competed in Seattle, Washington and hopes to be
able to attend the 1991 Convention in Denver, Colorado.
Lux is a lifetime member of the Rocky Mountain Elk
Foundation and hopes to put his skills to work this
season by calling in a bull for dad! Good Luck!

Gilliam Honored by
Johns Hopkins University
Tribal member Rebecca Gilliam of Dallas, Oregon was
one of only 180 Oregon seventh grade students honored
for their outstanding verbal andor mathematical
abilities by Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore,
Maryland during their annual talent search. The search
was conducted by the University's Center for the
Advancement of Academically Talented Youth and it'
included more than 46,000 students from over 4,000
schools in 19 states and the District of Columbia.
According to information provided by Johns Hopkins
University only 15 of the students earned invitations to
the awards ceremony, including Gilliam.
Gilliam qualified to participate in the search in three
different areas by scoring in the 97th through 99th
percentile during recent college standardized achieve
ment tests (SAT's).
Gilliam received one of only four state awards that
were given in Oregon. Her award is particularly
outstanding when you consider that usually only high
school seniors are even eligible to take the standardized
achievement tests.
Bckkie's family and friends are very proud of her
scholastic achievements. "She reads extensively and she
did extremely well on the verbal part of the test,"
explained Rebecca's mother Susie. "She scored as well
as the above average High School Seniors who take the
test. We are very proud."

Bekkie Gilliam
Tribal Member Honored
We are pleased to annouce that Andrew Jcnness has
been selected to receive an Office of Multicultural
Affairs Recognition Award for Academic Excellence.
These awards were established to honor the contribu
tions made by students to the University through
leadership andor academic performance. Nominations
for these awards initially came from faculty and adminis
trators. In an effort to give appriate recognition to
African-American, American Indian, Asian-Pacific
American, and ChicanoLatino students for their ac
complishments, we are proud to invite you to a recep
tion in their honor.
