government relations between the Tribes and the State
can be strengthened under his leadership. "There is
more that we could do as a state that we arc not doing.
In Chapter 190 of the Oregon Statutes there is a
provision for intergovernmental agreements, where
different government units can make agreements to
work with each other on common problems. So, right
now we have the power to do more than we are pres
ently doing."
Congressional candidate Mike Kopctski recalled his
days of growing up in Pendleton, near the Umatilla
Reservation and explained that he felt he had a unique
understanding of Native Americans and their culture
because of that experience. Kopctski also discussed how
he would approach budget expenditures if he were to be
elected as the congressional representative from the
state's fifth district. "We have got to insure that wc are
spending our money wisely and that is why I am running
for congress, to fight for those kind of changes," said
Kopetski. "I think we can win this battle and I look
forward to working with the Tribes on this specific
issue."
Both Roberts and Frohnmayer predicted economic
growth for the State of Oregon in the coming decade.
"We are getting ready to experience the greatest growth
in Oregon since the white man came in and took your
land," said Roberts. "This new growth means we'll need
new houses, new roads and new construction. We will
do everything we can to make sure that happens. I don't
want Oregon to fail, I want us to plan and get ready and
be sure we have got the jobs in place." Frohnmayer said
he thinks it is important that the people in the State of
Oregon elect a governor that is familiar with issues like
the budget and how economic growth could impact the
state. "I think we are going to see a re-emphasis on
economic growth and development in small communi
ties and how they can become more vital to the process."
