Miss Grand Ronde Jolene Poole (standing right), her mother Annabclle Poole and her grandmother Leona
Scverin (75) got the chance to meet with Govenor Neil Goldschmidt at the Magnolia Manor nursing home in
Salem, Oregon. Goldschmidt was at the home at the request of the owner for the 100th birthday of a patient.
USDA Food Distribution
The USDA Food Distribution for Salem will be May
15, 16, & 17, 1990. The Silctz Food Distribution for
May will be 14, 15, 16, & 18, 199Q. Our ware house
hours are 8:00 to 12:00 and from 1:00 to 4:30 Monday
through Friday. We will be conducting a food survey in
May. Your help and input would be greatly appreciated.
WE HAVE HAD DUAL PARTICIPATION RE
CEIVING FOOD STAMPS AND COMMODITIES
AT THE SAME TIME. THE RESULT IS PAYING
BACK FOR THE FOOD OR THE AMOUNT OF
STAMPS RECEIVED. FRAUD IS AGAINST THE
LAW, YOU WILL BE SUSPENDED FOR 6
MONTHS FROM EACH PROGRAM.
We are here to help you with your needs, so please
help us by not participating on both programs.
We would like to thank Kevin, Jim, Gene, Robert,
Scotty, Steve, Bob, Pearl, Misty, Mark, Wayne, Wendy,
Clifton, Tygem and Arthur for helping unload the truck.
I would like to thank Melody and Charmaine for
stopping by to help. A big thanks to Kevin for the
cake that arrived at 6 a.m.

Royalty Court
This years Royalty Court consists of Krystal Schmid,
Tara Leno, Ronacle Loomis. Each of these girls are
running for the title of Jr. Miss Grand Ronde.
The Court has already been busy participating in the
Willamette University Pow Wow in Salem, the Willam
ette High School Pow Wow in Eugene, a Girl Scout
presentation at the Grade School and a Bake Food Sale
at the April 1st General Meeting.' The Royalty Court
and Committee would like to thank everyone for their
support of the Bake Food Sale. The CourtCommittee ,
made $66.00!

A Committee in Action!

March 13th - Archaeological Committee Meeting
Kathryn Harrison gave her Washington D.C. report to
the Committee. She was able to meet with Dr. Douglas
Owsley, the Curator of the Museum of Natural History,
and with Dr. Douglas Ubclaker, Dept. of Physical An
thropology, Museum of Natural History. She inquired
about "repatriation" of any Grand Ronde remains. She
voiced our concerns regarding the returning of ancestral
remains and artifacts.
Ken Ames, a Professor at Portland State University
presented a slide presentation, that showed an archaeo
logical dig he conducted on a plank house. Archaeolo
gist, Greg Bruchard also connected with P.S.U., showed
slides about a mountain archaeological dig on a seasonal
camp site.
Both digs represent culturally significant data relevant
to the Grand Ronde Tribes. These slides were pre
sented at the April 1st General Council Meeting by
Greg Bruchard.
March 31st Archaeological Committee Meeting
The meeting with the Sacred Lands Committee of
Silctz resulted from concerns about a Kalapuyan burial
from Sweet Home.
March 24, 25, 26 -Northwest
Anthropological Conference.
Kathryn Harrison, Merle Holmes, JoAnn Mercicr,
Patty Hoopingarner and Ken Schmid attended the
annual Northwest Anthropological Conference held in
Eugene, Oregon. A letter the Tribal Council Chairman,
Mark Mercicr, thanked the Council for making the par
ticipation of the Archaeological Committee members
possible. A special thank you was extended to Merle
Holmes and Kathryn Harrison who took an active role
on one of the panels. Their presence and participation
showed the "non-Indians care and are willing to cooper
ate in resolving such issues as repatriation".
April 9th - Archaeological Meeting
Dennis Worth, an O.S.U. student brought a slide
presentation of artifacts that were collected from the
Grand Ronde Agency area in the 1870's, these items arc
now located in a museum in London, England.
