Wrestling Programs
The Little Guy program went well this year. The State
Tournament was held on February 18,1990. We had
several participate in the tournament they were; Dustin
Leno, Jake McKnight, J.D. Butler, Elvin Butler, Daniel
Mooney, Joe Mercier, and Manny Mercier. Several of
these boys also participated in the Junior High program
at the Middle school. The kids worked very hard and it
paid off because they had a good season and a good
time. There were some little guys who wrestled and
didn't go to state but did their best all season they were
Nick Bishop, Brad Leno, Brett Leno.
Willamina High had two Tribal members wrestling this
year they were Shonn Leno and Cory Menely. The
Willamina team finished 4th District which was held in
Waldport and 4th in State which was held at Western
Oregon State College.
Cory is a Senior this year and placed 4th at District.
He also won the "Coaches Award" they felt he had
worked hard all year and was at all practices.
Shonn placed 1st at District and 3rd at State. He also
got an award for "Outstanding Wrestler" he shared this
with two other team-mates.
Over-all the wrestlers did great and they want to thank
the Tribal Council and members for all the support they
received!!
Three Bulldogs Win
Mat Medals
Willamina wrestlers Shonn Leno, Jimmy DcBoff and
Chris Rupp brought home third place medals in the
state tournament last month at Western Oregon State
College in Monmouth.
Leno, wrestling in the 98 pound division, lost his first
match at state 7-2 to Glendale's Nick Cline. But he
came back strong to defeat M. Patton of Wahtonka 6 - 2
and decisioned R. Lee of Warrenton 2 -1 to come in
third.
Leno, one of Willamina's top mat-men this year,
finished the season with a 25 - 4 record.
The Bulldogs finished in fifth place at state with 40
points. Riddle won the title for the second year in a
row.
Leno placed first in district competition earlier at
Waldport. The other three Bulldogs who competed at
state placed second at district.
Coach Bob Bishop is looking ahead to next year's
season and predicts big things for his team since only
two wrestlers, Rupp and Corey Meneley, will be gradu
ating. Mcneley, at 136, finished the year with a 20 -10 record.
Bulldogs Are Honored
Willamina athletes were honored at the winter sports
dessert.
Three wrestlers were named as outstanding: SHONN
LENO, Cris Rupp and Jimmy DeBoff.
Transitions During
the Prime Years
By Bonnie Martin
Are you planning on retiring in the near future? The
prime years can be an awkward age because enjoyment
of life does not stop at 55, 65, or 75 years of age. Some
times the mind gets sharper as a person gets older, and
people's verbal ability improves with age. The one thing
that docs not get better with age is finances.
Some of the things to think of when planning for
retirement are;
- Where do you want to live? Do you own a home?
- If you own a home, can you maintain it on your
retirement income?
Would an apartment be suitable?
- Would you want to live with your children?
Do you have adequate health insurance?
One of the best ways to start planning for retirement is
to talk with people that have retired and take advantage
of what they have learned through experience.
Before you retire, check on pension plans or retire
ment plans if you have them where you work, find out
what your social security benefit will be when you
actually retire, check on life insurance policies and
health insurance policies.
If you are in good health you may want to keep
working or start a new career. If you do not want to
work, you may want to start a hobby, go back to school,
travel, volunteer on tribal committees, be a foster
Grandparent, or join the Peace Corp! Staying active
reduces stress, tension and mental fatigue. HAPPY
RETIREMENT.

TRIBAL COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES
02-21-90
FORESTRY - a) INDIAN PREFERENCE FOR
SALVAGE SALES - Mark gave a brief report on the
January 26th meeting with Bill Smith and John Hamp
ton. Jim Willis and Cliff Adams were also present at
that meeting. Mark informed the Council that Hampton
felt the Tribe was violating the Memorandum of agree
ment signed between the Tribe and the Bureau of
Indian affairs, since the Tribe was allowing Tribal
member preference to handle the Salvage Timber Sales.
Mark also informed the Council that the Jan. 26th
meeting was discussed with Senator Hatfield when they
were in Washington, D.C. on February 6th. The Senator
said he would contact Mr. Hampton on this issue. Ray
moved for the Tribe to continue allowing Indian
Preference for the Salvage Timber sales, since the
Reservation is technically under the jurisdiction of the
Bureau of Indian Affairs, and the BIA requires Indian
preference for salvage sales. Bob seconded the motion,
motion carried. The Council wished Mark to contact
Senator Hatfield's office to see if the Senator had a
chance to speak with Hampton before a letter is to be
mailed to Hampton.
REQUEST FOR YOUTH TRIP TO RESERVA
TION - Brent requested the Council to consider setting
some land aside for the Tribal youth to plant some trees.
Waivers from the parents will be signed prior to the
youth activity. The Tribal Forester will be present to
assure that planting will be done properly. Ray moved
to approve the request. Candy seconded the motion.
Motion carried.
Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife wants to
release some wild turkeys on the reservation and
requested Mark to sign an agreement regarding the
release of the birds. We will have our attorneys check it
out. Matter was tabled.
COMMITTEE APPLICATIONS - Three applica
tions were submitted to Council. Ken Schmid was
selected to serve on the Archaeology Committee. Floyd
LaBonte was selected to serve on the Cemetery Com
mittee. Candy requested the Council to approve an
increase in membership for the Fish and Wildlife Com
mittee since there are two Tribal members very inter
ested in serving on that committee. Discussion ensued
regarding the need for more people to serve on the Fish
and Wildlife committee. Mark pointed out if more were
to be added, it would put further strain on their budget.
Council suggested the two members be notified to help
at specific activities such as fish cleaning, or having them
serve in an adhoc capacity.
Mark requested to address the newsletter mailed by
our "neighbor to the west" published by PARR (Protect
Americas Rights and Resources). Mark feels it is
important to educate the General Council of the
growing tide of Anti-Indian backlash taking place
through out the Nation.
NPAIHB QUARTERLY MEETING - The Northwest
Portland Area Indian Health Board meeting will be held
April 17th, 18th, and 19th, at the Monarch Motor Inn in
Clackamas.
LETTER FROM ATNI - A letter has been received
requesting approval for Jim Willis to assist in the
restructuring of ATNI. Council approved the request.
OTHER BUSINESS
- Mark Kendall will be working with our Committees
to assist in procedures for each committee.
- Mark will clarify that the constitution for Oregon
Department of Fish and Wildlife has been amended
before consideration of the Tribes' joining the organiza
tion. - Val moved to designate Merle Holmes to act as
Tribal representative for the new American Indian
Program in Washington, D.C. and to research any
information pertinent to the Grand Ronde Tribe.
