CENSUS DUE APRIL 1
This month the U.S. Bureau of Census will be mailing
out the 1990 Census Questionnaires. .
Most people will receive the short form, but one in six
people will receive the long form containing 59 ques
tions. Information on the census, which is taken every 10
years, is confidential from other areas of the government
and from the public.
The question pertaining to race is extremely important
to every tribe in the U.S.
Government financial assistance to each tribe for the
next ten years is determined by the number of people in
the tribe, so it is vital that every member of every tribe
be accurately counted as a member of their tribe.
Anyone who wants to be counted as an Indian must
mark only the circle nest to "Indian." They should not
mark next to the "White," "Black" or "Other race"
options on the census even if they are of mixed race.
The computer will read those marks first and move on
to the next question without noting tribal affiliation.
After filling in the circle, they should clearly note the
specific name of the tribe they want to be counted with,
even if they are not a registered member of the tribe.
Anyone receiving the long form and who wants their
family to be counted as an Indian adult family member
as the Head of Household.
If the wife is Indian, but the husband white, the wife
must be listed as the Head of Household. If the hus
band is listed as Head of Household, the whole family
will be counted as white.

To commemorate the fifth anniversary of the Native
American Press Association, the board of directors has
approved the release of the Native American Journalism

papers, articles and essays is now finalized. Past,
present and future perspectives on the state of Indian
journalism will be accepted. Suggested article topics in
clude, but are not limited to, freedom of the press on
Indian reservations, Native American journalists and
press responsibilities, and the roll of the press on Indian
reservations. Student journalists are encouraged to
submit research papers and articles. At this time, plans
are now underway to conduct a national symposium to
