The five members include, Chairman CeCe Kneeland, Secretary Joann Mercier, Kathryn Harrison, Merle Holmes, and Tammy Fry. Just recently the Committee met with David Brauner, archeologist from Oregon State University, who shared many interesting ideas for implementing the Committee. Right now they are in the process of trying to get training to know how to identify various artifacts. Anyone who may be interested in learning more about the meetings or may have any ideas, can call Joann Mercier at 879-5211. "TIMBER COMMITTEE" By Michael Childers With Winter coming on, the Timber Committee has decided to start meeting once a month beginning on November 7th and then will resume meeting semi monthly in early May. The officers for the Committee that were elected at the second meeting held on August 8th, 1989, are: -Cliff Adams -Supervisor - Connie Monson - Acting SecTreasurer -Ray Mcknight - Chairman - Larry Brandon - Co-Chair - Reynold Leno - Jean Labonte - Daryll Mercier - Russ Leno The main topic that has been discussed at every meeting so far is the pertinence of the Salvage Sales, but now that the sales have been let out, it hasn't been as much of a concern as usual and firewood is," says Cliff Adams. Elders that are 62 and over get a free use permit to be allowed to cut year round from 6:00 am to 1:00 pm, Monday through Friday, and if any elders have questions concerning the Firewood they can call the Chairman, Ray McKnight at 879-5211. "But besides the firewood and salvage sales, we still have other duties and business that are also important," such as: - Slash Burning - Making rode signs for Reservation - Providing quality service to the General Membership - Reporting monthly to the Tribal Council on problems and other relevant information and most important; - Protect the Tribes' interests and assets involving the timber resource on the Reservation. Anyone interested in attending the meetings are welcome to come, and if they have any questions or concerns, they may feel free to call Ray or Cliff at 879-5211. "LET US RISE" For many moons, my people, We've been told that we're no good They say we take from the whiteman Instead of working like we should They call us drunken Indians They say we have no pride They say we're thieves and call us lazy They call us "worthless tribes." But the whiteman looks inside a mirror and it reflects the hatred in his heart Because he sees in us, what he has done When he pulled our Tribes apart When the whiteman stripped us of our land He planted angry seeds Today, they are roots, they drink our blood And so the whiteman sees us bleed I say to you, my people .. The time has come to change Let them see that we have pride That they can cause us no more shame Yes, the whiteman's taken much from us And some of them tried to take the one thing we still have I say brothers, "Guard your pride" Oh Great Spirit, stand beside us As we rise as one great cloud Let the whiteman laugh no longer We are Warriors...We are Proud! By Kathryn L. Moore Dedicated to the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde and the Siletz Indian people.
