Chairman's Report By Mark Mercier
On behalf of the Confederated Tribes of
Grand Ronde, I wish to thank everyone for
attending our fifth annual Pow-Wow. This
celebration was our biggest so far.
Our thanks to Tom Ball, Wilma Crow,
Kathryn Harrison , Frank Peterson and Tessie
Williams for serving as judges during our Roy
alty Pageant on Friday night.
Saturday, August 18th was the "Grand Daddy"
of our three day event. All of our Tribal repre- ,
sentitives were somewhat overwhelmed by the
enormous amount of folks present. Since out
Tribe began hosting Pow- Wows, this was the
biggest yet. The event was not without a few
problems and I would like to take this opportu
nity to point them out.
It came to my attention that there was a mis-'
understanding between some Pow- Wow com
mittee members and some of the vendors over
where they should park and the availability of
electricity. The two major contributing factors
regardng this problem were the fact that there
was only a limited amount of electricity avail
able to the vendors and the other was a lack of
communication with the person who was
designated to handle were the vendors were
supposed to park
Since the Tribe does not have any available for
a Pow-Wow grounds at this time, the use of the
Grand Ronde Elementary School was essential.
In the future, the Tribe hopes to obtain lands
around the Grand Ronde community for use in
these kinds of events, would like you to know
thatfnding an area for the Pow-Wow grounds
will be under close consideration. Until that
happens, we will continue to utilize the school
grounds.
As a newly restored Tribe, we are experiencing
some "growing pains. "As we move into the
future, the Tribe will have to work together
carefully in planning for growth, .as we continue
to grow, some mistakes will happen. But, from
our mistakes and problems, we hope to learn.
In closing, we ask you for your patience and
hope to see you at the Pow-Wow next year.
