THE CONFEDERATED TRIBES OF THE mu SEPTEMBER 1989 GRAND RONDE COMMUNITY OF OREGON THE CONFEDERATED TRIBES OF GRAND RONDE CELEBRATE AT THEIR FIFTH ANNUAL POW WOW The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde celebrated their restoration and the establish ment of their 9,811 acre reservation August 18th, 19th and 20th during the Tribes' fifth annual Pow-Wow. Powr Wow Committee Chairman Merle Leno estimated that well over 3,000 people from all -over the country visited the three day celebra tion. This year' s Pow- Wow was the Tribes ' biggest to date and it was the first time that the event was held for three days. Past celebrations were limited to just one day. Leno also said that the event had more than 60 vendors in attendance showcasing various arts and crafts, food, jewerly, woodwork and . clothing. A Royalty Pageant was held Friday evening to announce the new Royalty Court candidates and the coronation took place Saturday after noon. 1988-89 Jr. Miss Grand Ronde Erica Mercier and Sr. Miss Grand Ronde Michael Childers presented traditional Native shawls to the new Royalty. Molly Rimer was selected as the 1989-90 Jr. Miss Grand Ronde and the new Sr. Miss Grand Ronde is Jolene Poole. This year's Master of Ceremonies was Rudy Clements of Warm Springs, Oregon and six drum groups from the Western section of the country took turns providing the sounds for the many dancers who took part in the celebration. The drum groups were the Four Directions, Choke Cherry, Warm Springs, Salem Inter Tribal, the Wasco Nation and Lakota Ho. Grand Ronde Tribal member Stan Kneeland of Warm Springs, who recently competed in the Cascade Run-Off and the Boston Marathon, served as the honorary chairman of the annual Fun RunWalk for Healtlu Andrea Samson won the youth race and Vickie and Candy ... Julia Big Back won the Tiny Tots 5-7) race and Jessie Brandon was second. Sharona Wolf Back was third In the 4 and under age group race the winners were Mickey Hoopingardener and Charles Kneeland. Cindy Martin won the one-mile competition and Emilio Ortiz won the SKwith a time of 17:47. Mario Ortiz was second in 19:29 andAl Oppliger finished third in 21:32. Stan Kneeland won the 10K Competi tion in a time of 35:20 and Marvin Fraqua was second in 42:02. Iris Quam was third with a time of 50:50.
