TRIBAL COUNCIL ELECTIONS -SEPTEMBER
10TH
GENERAL COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES
May 7, 1989
Grand Ronde Elementary School
WAGON PRESENTATION: Mark introduced Tommy
Jo (T J.) Melson, his mother Angela Melson and his
grandmother Loretta McKnight to those present. TJ. is
a leukemia patient receiving treatment at Dorenbecker
Hospital in Portland. He explained that when the
Council learned that T J. really wanted a red wagon to
play with, they elected to purchase one for him. Mark
presented the wagon to T J.. Loretta thanked everyone
on behalf of T J. and the family.
TRIBAL COURT ACTIVITIES: Mark outlined the
activities the Tribal Court, when in place, will handle.
Some of those activities include Indian Child Welfare
cases, swearing in of new Tribal Council members and
Hunting and Fishing appeals. The Tribal Court will
have the power to overturn any legislative decision made
by the Tribal Council that is found to be in direct
conflict with the Tribal Constitution or Indian Civil
Rights Act.
CEMETERY ACTIVITIES UPDATE: The Cemetery
Committee (Russ Leno, Wilmadene Butler, Val Grout,
Blanche Lillard, Darrel Mercier) has been very busy
cleaning and repairing at the cemetery. A bathroom has
also been installed in the office there. Mark announced
that Blanche fell while at the cemetery and is recovering
from a broken hip. He asked the members present if
there was any objection to installing a chain link fence
with a locking gate to prevent vandalism at the cemetery.

T-SHIRT PRESENTATION: Margaret Provost
presented T-Shirts to the Tribal Council from Stan
Kneeland to show his appreciation for the Tribes'
support for his trip to Boston to participate in the
Boston Marathon.
TRIBAL COUNCIL NOMINATIONS:
The following nominations were made and accepted.
Marvin Kimsey nominated Bob Mercier.
Cheryle Kennedy nominated Cecile Kneeland.
Monte Ring nominated Russ Leno.
Marie Logan nominated Merle Leno.
Riley Porter nominated Kathryn Harrison.
Merle Holmes nominated Gary Rieback.
Mark Mercier nominated Val Grout.
JoAnn McClary nominated Darrel Mercier.
Margaret Provost nominated Pat Martin.
Ray McKnight nominated Gene LaBonte.
Myrna Brandon nominated Larry Brandon.
Russ Leno nominated Tom Leno.
Val Grout moved that the nominations be closed.
Penny Deloe seconded the motion. Motion carried.
The Tribal Council elections will be held on September
9th.
TRIBAL OFFICE - 9 AM. - 6 P.M.
WHO MAY VOTE:
Any duly enrolled member of the Confederated Tribes
of the Grand Ronde Community of Oregon who will be
18 years of age or older on the date of any scheduled
elections shall have the right to vote in the election.
"Duly enrolled member" shall mean any person who
has been accepted as a member of the Tribe in accor
dance with the Tribal enrollment ordinance adopted
pursuant to Article V of the Grand Ronde Constitition
or in accordance with section 7 of the Grand Ronde
Restoration Act.

At the Tribal Council election in September 1989, the
three (3) members receiving the highest number of votes
shall be elected to a three (3) year term.

Aaron.
ABSENTEE BALLOTS
Absentee Ballots must be mailed or hand delivered to
the Election Board at the Grand Ronde Tribal Office,
P.O. Box 38, Grand Ronde, Oregon 97347, and deliv
ered no later than 6:00 p.m. on September 10, 1987.
