We use these words in connection with Indian Child Welfare programs, child abuse and neglect prevention programs, and just about every other children's program we have. This time, I would like to use these words quite differ ently. Without our children, there can be no tribe, and our Tribe is proud of the many outstanding young people that are members. I would like to bring your attention to just a few. During the past two years, I have had the pleasure of travelling with the designated Tribal youth representative, Michael Childers. At the many youth conferences we have attended, Michael has been an active participant, always displaying exemplary behavior as she represents our Tribe at these activities. Often the Tribe is complimented on the outstanding job Michael does, by the other people present. By her example, youth from all over the United States and Canada have learned of the high caliber of young people that are members of our Tribe. To be outstanding does not always mean getting the highest grades in school or being the best athlete. It means always doing your best. Sometimes it is doing a good job that no one else even knows about. Tribal kids, Mario George and Toby McClary are always ready to help. It doesn't matter what the job is, hiding easter eggs, or setting up chairs, they are always on hand. Two more outstanding young people. Our Tribe will be well represented at the Kennedy Space Center and Disney World in April by five out standing young people: Trevor Aaron, Angie Leno, Leanna McKnight, Cory Maneely and Tom McKnight. They are high academic achievers and good athletes. These five have worked hard to earn the almost $3,000 it will take for expenses to make their trip. They have baby-sat, served spaghetti, sold raffle tickets, washed cars, sold baked goods and run bingo games as they worked towards their goal. Cindy Martin may be best remembered as Miss Senior Grand Ronde 1987. I am going to remember her as a young lady who took that experience and began working on the Pow wow Royalty Committee to help others obtain that goal. The children at the elementary school will remember her as a substitute teacher in the Title IV Indian Education classroom. All of these outstanding young men and women are all Tribal members, and are by no means the only ones. They are but a few examples of the great many worthy young people of our Tribe. One thing they all have in common are supportive parents. When you see an outstanding young person, you need to be aware that they weren't just born that way. Each of these kids were raised and nurtured by people who loved them and taught them how to grow into the fine examples they have become. We can be proud of these young people, but we owe a great debt of , gratitude to the adults that raised them. Without our children there can be no Tribe. From my perspective, I can heave a great sign of relief when I look at the future leaders of our Tribe. We have begun investing in our own future when we strongly support our children.
