ON OFFICIAL MEMBERSHIP ROLL
Dear Fellow Tribal Members and Friends,
Last months enrollment article on deceased members
has caused mass confusion, and I apologize for any
misunderstanding.
TRIBAL MEMBERS WHO ARE DECEASED WILL
ALWAYS BE LISTED ON THE OFFICIAL MEM
BERSHIP ROLL. The official membership roll
includes the 1954 termination roll, which our Tribal
Restoration Act designated as our Tribes' "base roll",
the 1954 roll had members listed 1 through 862. When
restoration was received, the new enrollee's were issued
roll numbers which began with 863, and as of now, end
at 2417, our current membership total.
Since the reservation lands were approved, I have been
providing statistics for future planning. Without remov
ing the deceased members from the "working roll", the
statistics submitted would be inaccurate.
Please understand that your family members who are
deceased WILL NOT be wiped out of the present or
future tribal records. They were listed by their roll
number, but designated as deceased.
If a member who's number 4000, passed away, their roll
number would be listed as D4000. Please contact me
if you wish more information in regard to removing de
ceased members from our roll. Also please let family
members know that the deceased are removed from the
"working roll" for statistical purposes only.
I am required to report deceased members to the
Bureau of Indian Affairs. Before the B.IA. is notified
of any deaths, the Enrollment Committee verifies that
the documentation has been submitted, or that the
names of members believed to be deceased have been
published in accordance with the C.T.G.R. Enrollment
Ordinance.
The Enrollment Committee recommends that the Tribal
Council approve members names to be designated as
deceased. The names of deceased Tribal Members will
not be submitted to the B.IA. without Enrollment
Committee review, and Tribal Council approval.
It is required to report any change on the membership
roll. Documentation that is acceptable as proof that a
member is deceased includes:
1. Death Certificate
2. Mortuary records
3. Hospital records
4. Obituary notices from newspapers.
5. B.I A records
6. Written, signed statement from a relative, giving date
of death.
7. Written, signed statement from someone who at
tended the funeral or saw the grave marker, and can
provide the date of death.
Last month I had listed the following members as
possibly deceased. If you can supply a date of death,
please send the form below to me. It is for the benefit
of the whole tribe for the enrollment office to keep
