1988 ROYALTY COURT SELECTED
After many months of representing the Grand Ronde
Tribe in parades and pow-wows across Oregon, the
1988 Royalty Court Princesses presented themselves
before a panel of judges to decide who would be
crowed Junior Miss and Senior Miss Grand Ronde.
Running for Jr. Miss Grand Ronde were E'Lisha
Lane and Erica Mercier and for Sr. Miss Grand
Ronde were Mario George and Michael Childers.
The distinguished panel of judges included: Kathryn
Harrison, Grand Ronde; Frank Peterson, Siletz;
Tessie Williams, Umatilla; June Poitras, Klamath;
and Jo Zollinger, Sioux.
The girls were judged on a speech which contained
information on themselves, their families and their
regalia.
E'Lisha Lane, daughter of Dorothy Lane, described
her family background. "Its a great honor," said
E'Lisha when questioned why she wanted to be Jr.
Miss Grand Ronde.
"I have been very proud to be a princess for my tribe
in the past few months," said Erica Mercier, daughter
of Bruce and Melinda Mercier.
"I made new friends and learned about my Indian
culture. I learned about the give away and I helped to
make some of the things we are giving away," Erica
said. "I would be very happy and honored to be chosen
Jr. Miss Grand Ronde."
"I am very proud to have had the honor of represent
ing my tribe," said Marlp George who was 1987 Jr.
Miss Grand Ronde and vying for Sr. Miss Grand
Ronde for 1988.
"My heritage has taught me the importance of listen
ing to my elders," said Mario. "Also that it isn't im
portant to always get rewards for what you do, but to
be ready to do something for others. I'll always be
ready to help my Tribe and its members," said Mario.
Mario is the daughter of Monte and Margo George.
Also vying for Sr. Miss Grand Ronde was Michael
Childers, daughter of Jess and Candy Robertson.
One of my main concerns is that the youth of all tribes
work at being good examples and role models and
teach the younger ones the importance of staving in
school, staying away from drugs and alcohol and to
listen and learn from our elders, said Michael.
"I am committed as a young person to be an
example to our little ones and if chosen as Miss
Grand Ronde, I will do my best to fulfil this commit
ment and to be the very best tribal representative
possible," said Michael.
The girls were also judged on their overall appear
ance, personality, poise and raffle sales.
