THE CONFEDERATED TRIBES OF THE
GRAND RONDE COMMUNITY OF OREGON
CHAIRMAN'S
REPORT
Well, we completed our 4th annual Pow Wow on August
20th, 1988. This year's attendance was an estimated
1300 plus people! Our pow wow gets bigger every year.
We are indebted to all who helped prepare for our
event. Believe me, it takes a lot of careful planning and
hard work to make an event of this magnitude a success.
For instance, a group of tribal elders, tribal staff, and
members of the community gathered once a week to
make items for the Tribal give-away. The group is
anxious to get together soon, to begin making items for
next year's pow wow. Thanks to all who worked so hard
on the give-away items!
We also acknowledge all of the great folks who worked
in the kitchen preparing our feast. Its no small task
preparing a meal for 1300 people. Especially for those
who worked at the deep-fryers cooking the frybread
they endured 100 degree temperatures to contribute to
the meal!
Our special thanks to Paul Whitehead of Eugene. Paul,
a traditional dancer, travels extensively to pow wows
throughout the Northwest. He met several times with
the Pow Wow Committee, Tribal Council and interested
tribal members throughout the year to teach dance
classes and talk about pow wow protocol. We enjoyed
working with Paul and look forward to his assistance in
the future, planning the event for next year!
Our special thanks to the Lomboy Family for their
contribution in memory of Esther Jones LaBonte.
Special thanks to Hofenbredl Logging for their pow wow
contribution, and for bringing their tilt-bed hauling
trailer used for the stage.
We acknowledge Jim and Wilmadene Butler of Mon
mouth, Oregon for their contribution of a beautiful
cutting boardmicrowave stand used as the grand prize
for the raffle this year.
Our thanks to Art and Dolly Anderson from Amity,
Oregon. They donated a large frying pan which origi
nally came from our tribal office, when it was the Grand
Ronde Hotel! It was used to cook meals for the local
loggers.
There are many, many people who contributed to our
annual event. They were tribal and non-tribal members,
all who worked diligently to make the pow wow a
success. Our sheerest thanks to these people.
Hope to see you all next year!
Sincerely,
Mark Mercier
