She tied it around her waist and carried all her hop tickets in it So, when she quit going, I had to have the big purse to carry the hop tickets. At the end of the week, we'd go cash our hop tickets, and we were always short They were accusing me of spendng theirs, stealing or something. So one day, Dorothy was sick so she stayed at the camp. Our bed was on the ground on the straw. We were out pick ing hops and she was sick in the tent Somebody was behind the tent, and the tent raised up and a little hand reached in there and got the purse. She jumped up and rushed and caught the thief. Thats what happened to the tickets all the time. I couldn't carry that purse with me. Mama tied it around her waist, but I hid it underneath our bed. So that was why they were stealing. ' -Velma Mercier Clara, Harold and Edith Riggs and Agness Dowd. Photo Courtesty of Ila Dowd. "It seems like it was towards morning and somebody said there was a fire. We looked and could see the dryers all blazing and I was running out there screaming 'FIRE!' My aunt Pauline was in the tent Somebody told her to get our bedding out and she rolled Orrin up it I don't know if she earned him out or not " Guess who! Photo Courtesy of Nora Kimsey.
