PAGES EDUCATION EDUCATION UPDATE With the start of 1988, the Education Program is -currently providing services to a total of 14 Higher Education, 14 Employment Assistance Adult Voca tional Training, and 22 Adult Education students. Additional activities which the Education Program will provide and host during the upcoming months, include a Vocational Awareness & Employment Workshop, community college & university visitations, culture & heritage classes, continued financial aid application help sessions for the 1988-'89 academic year, and other conferences, seminars, and workshops as they arise. Other ongoing activities which the Education Program is involved, will be: Tribal Education Committee planning for Higher Education & Adult Education Tribal Procedural Manuals; putting together a Tribal Educa tion Plan; JOM contract & program development; coordinating a community Family Math Training workshop for parents and children; and assisting eligible tribal members with application process for school & training program enrollment. OREGON SCHOLARSHIPS As previously mentioned in the December newsletter, the State of Oregon is offering scholarships to selected first time freshmen entering school during the 1988-89 school year. The awards are worth $1,500 each, per academic year and will provide for tuition and fees at these colleges & universities: a -Eastern Oregon State College -Oregon State University -Oregon Insitute Of Technology -Oregon Health Science University -Western Oregon State College -University of Oregon -Portland State University -Southern Oregon State College High school seniors and first time students (beyond high school age included) who plan on entering college next Fall Term 1988, apply for this Minority Tuition & Fee Award Program. DEADLINE for submitting applications is MARCH 1st, 1988. WILLAMINA INDIAN ED. WORKSHOP SUCCESSFUL Title IV OPEN HOUSE.. January 12, 1987. Parent Committee meeting 6:00-6:30 p.m. Come and see the Title IV room! Modular unit behind the Grand Ronde Elementary School. Student's cultural crafts will be displayed and dessert will be served. ALL ARE WEL COME!!! The local Title IV program is in the process of preparing a grant application for the 88-89 school year. In the past, our Title IV program has offered tutorial assis tance and cultural awareness programs. Students who are in kindergarten through 12th grade, attend school in the Willamina school district and are a member of an Indian tribe are eligible for services. The Title IV program is required to have a parent committee who works with the school district in plan ning and implementing a program. If you feel that the local program is not providing needed services, attend , the parent committee meetings. Your input is needed and WANTED!!! An annual survey called a needs assessment is done throughout the district. Parents, students and teachers are asked for input. The returned needs assessments are tallied and the greatest needs identified by the survey are prioritized to plan services and activities. CLASSES The Adult Education Program has been offering Culture Classes during the past two months, in bead work. Instruction enable class participations to desigr and make beaded items such as medallions, and ear rings. The class has an average of 15 people in atten dance. Future clasess are now being planned for instruction in moccassin making, Chinook jargon, and making of leather bags. The next set of classes are tentatively being scheduled for mid-January 1988. FAMILY MATH The Oregon Indian Education Association is sponsoring a two day workshop for parents and programs who work with Indian children in tutorial or home study activities. The workshop will be held in Eugene, Oregon on (dates are tentative) January 31, and February 1, 1988. The workshop offers activities and hints for parents and how to work with your children in math. Activities are hands on type experiences and generate a lot of fun and enthusiasm. If you are interested in attending please contact the Tribal Adult Education Program, 879-5211. Registra tion, fees ad materials can be provided. The Higher Education and Career Awareness Work shop held on November 25th, 1987 was off and running on a positive note. Over 18 participants attended the workshop which covered educational topics such as: Financial Aid Form application for 1988-89, College & University offerings, Nursing & Health Related Careers and achieving Success as a student. Participants came from Salem; Willamina; Grand Ronde; Vancouver, Wa; Lebanon; and Dallas. Presen ters shared information covering application and admissions, the Do's & Don'ts of applying for funding, school contact & visitations and finally, accepting responsibility for your own future and success. Co-sponsors of the November 28th, workshop were the Willamina's School District's Title IV Indian Education Program and the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde's Education Program.
