EDUCATION During June, July and August, the Tribe provided assistance to eight students in higher education; six students in employment assistance and adult voca tional training (AVT); and 35 participants in Adult Education classes. During this time a number of the adult education participants were involved in culture classes conducted prior to the Tribe's annual pow wow. With the month of August comes final touches on application submitted at the July 31st, 1987 deadline. In projecting, it appears the Tribe will realize a total of 30 higher education and adult vocational training students, participating in Fall 1987 enrollment Students who missed Fall Term deadline, or who are still in the process of gathering documentation neces sary for AVT or higher education applications, need to submit their applications by NOVEMBER 30th, 1987 for WINTER Term 1988. CONGRATULATIONS AGAIN! The month of August also witnessed students who completed their Adult Vocational Training Program! RHONDA HANSON completed her Dental Assistance Programs at Chemeketa Community College and received her certificate of completion. She is now involved in a massive Job search. CAROL LOGAN completed her Accounting Program at Merritt Davis Business College in Eugene and received her certificate of completion. Carol is also involved in job search efforts. This brings the total number of students who have completed their Adult Vocational Training Programs to six! Of this number, three are now employed. A hearty CONGRATULATIONS to CAROL and RHONDA, you've done us all proud! SEQUOYAH GRANT The Association on American Indian Affairs is offering nine $1,500 Sequoyah Fellowships for graduate stu dents. The program provides a one-year unrestricted stipend that Is paid in two equal Installments. The fellowships have gone to students in such diverse fields as anthropology, microbiology, education, law, me chanical engineering, psychology and business admini stration. Applicants must be enrolled members of an American Indian tribe or Alaskan Native corporation. Students must provide the following information: A biography describing the student's background. Two letters of recommendation, the name, address and phone number of the student's financial aid officer. Scholarship applications should be sent to: Scholar ship Coordinator; Association of American Indian Affairs; New York, New York 10016. The winners of the fellowships will be announced on October 1, 1987. 'Fifteen tribal members recently participated in a workshop sponsored by the Education Program. TRIBAL ED. WORKSHOP DEADLINES On August 28th, the Tribe's Higher Education, Employ ment' Assistance and Adult Vocatonal Training Pro grams conducted a "pre" school orientation workshop for new students & returning students. The Workshop was held at Chemeketa Community College and had 15 students in attendance. Areas covered during the workshop dealt with: student responsibilities, report ing requirements, financial aid applications, the tribal budget process, suspension and probationary status ar ,ade and credit hour requirements. The keynote speaker for the workshop was Mr. Fran cisco Garcia, of Nuevo Sol Inc. Mr. Garcia holds a Master's Degree from Western Oregon State College and currently works as a counselor at Chemeketa Community College. Francisco spoke on motivation, planning, problem solving and overcoming barriers in education. Students were also provided with a question and answer session and encouraged to participate in group discussion. The students' reaction was very positive and many of the students voiced a willingness to become involved in Tribal Education activities. A possible future workshop Is being planned for late March or early April 1988. 1987 Fall Term students, if you haven't already received an "Acknowledgement'' or "Student Aid Report" regarding your Financial Aid Form application for the 1987-88 school year, you may wish to contact your respective Financial Aid Office for a quick update. If you have questions regarding your tribal assistance, please call Dean at 879-5253. Summer Term students who have not yet submitted their 1987 Summer Term grades to this office, please be aware, no Tribal awards and grants will be made until this requirement has been met Get your grades in! Classes will begin around September 28 29th for many Oregon community colleges and universities.
