Enrollment
As it is stated in our Restoration Act (Section 7(2)) t "After the first election
of the tribal governing body is held pursuant to Section 6(d), the provisions of
the Constitution and Bylaws adopted in accordance with Section 6(a) shall govern
membership in the Tribe." This means we cannot process those applications for enrollment
that are one-sixteenth (116) or more, until after the first Tribal Council election.
I will still be notifying those people who need more documentation along with their
applications, by mail, so they can get their needed documentation in, and be ready
to go before the Enrollment Committee, after the first Tribal Council election.
Those who have submitted applications, and do not receive a letter stating that you
need more documentation, are in the enrollment pending file, ready for processing
after the first Tribal Council election. As soon as the date for the election is
set, the membership will be notified.
Election Notice
A tribal election will be held in March (exact date not yet decided) to elect a new
tribal council in accordance with our Restoration Act. The Act states that an election
must be held to elect a new tribal council within 120 days of the date that the Secretary
of the Interior signs our Constitution, which occurred November 30, 1984. The election
will be conducted by an impartial Election Board yet to be selected by the Interim
Council. At our General Meeting in February, Nomination of candidates will be made
from the floor and those persons nominated must be present at the meeting. If you
intend to run for office, or wish to nominate anyone, make sure you are at this
meeting! Only those people who are duly enrolled tribal members and are at least
18 years of age may nominate, vote, or run for office. If you were eligible to vote
in the tribe's first two elections, for Interim Council and on the Constitution,
you will be eligible to vote, and run for office, in this election. If there are
any questions consult a copy of our Restoration Act or come to, or call the Tribal
Depot for more information. A copy of the Restoration act is available at the Tribal
Depot for those people who do not have their own copy.
All 9 council seats will be voted on, in this election and council members elected
will hold office until September, 1987 as stated in our Constitution.
An election ordinance, which will set up rules for running the election is currently
being worked on by an ordinance committee, NAPOL's Attorney Sande Schmidt, and former
BIA official John Weddel. This ordinance will be adopted by the Interim Council
soon. It also will be available for inspection at the Tribal Depot for anyone wishing
to see a copy.
