The January 8, 1 984 , General meeting and Interim Council nominating meeting was well
attended by over 200 tribal members and guests. Valarene Grout Presented gifts of
canned salmon to the oldest tribal member present and the person who traveled the
furthest distance.

GRAND RONDE TRIBE HONORED
Because of their newly federally-recognized status, The Confederated Tribes of Grand
Ronde were honored guests at the Thursday nite banquet held during the mid-winter Conference
of the Affiliated Tribes of N.W. Indians at the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Portland, Oregon on
January 11-13, 1984.. Many kind words and accolades were voiced by the various Tribal leaders
present including the keynote speaker, David Matheson, Chairman of the Coeur d'Alene Tribal
Council. Kathryn Harrison, Vice-Chair of the Grand Ronde' s, told the group about the tribal
iii story, and the struggle for the restoration effort and achievement. Others in attendance
from Grand Ronde besides Kathryn, who is the Tribal delegate; and, Frank, her son, who is her
Alternate, were: Dean Mercier, Chairman; Candy Robertson, CecTreas.; Jim St. Martin, Exec.
Dir.; Russ Leno, Cheryl Carl, Enrollment Clerk; Pat Gray and Jess Robertson. Robert Taylor,
Aide to Congressman Les AuCoin, Portland Office, also, attended the banquet representing
the Congressman.
N.W. PORTLAND AREA INDIAN HEALTH BOARD MEETS
On January 17-19, 1984, Cheryl Carl and Kathryn Harrison attended the three-day
meeting of the N.W. PORTLAND AREA INDIAN HEALTH BOARD at the Davenport Hotel in Spokane,
Washington. This was a quarterly meeting of the Board members and was to introduce us,
the Grand Ronde1 s, as new members. At the request of the Exec. Dir., Sheila Weinmann, a
short presentation was given by Kathryn regarding the history of the Grand Ronde1 s, the
fight for restoration and how it came about, such as, dates, etc. and, our interest and
expectations in the area of health care. She introduced our Enrollment Clerk, Cheryl Carl,
to the Board and other participants.. ... -v- '. . 1 . '.
Many different speakers were heard including Dr. Graham, Dir., Health Resources and
Services Administration. The Grand Ronde1 s are in the Western Oregpn Service Unit and
their nearest Indian Health Service Clinic is the one located at Chemawa. A meeting has
been scheduled there with the Service Unit Director, Jim Edge, and Sheila Weinmann, on
January 31, 1984, to get acquainted. We, also, need to have a tribal Health Committee to
represent us at these meetings, sometime in the near future.
