URGENT URGENT URGENT TITLE IV, INDIAN EDUCATION ACT FUNDING IN JEOPARDY The Secretary of the Department of Education, Terrel Bell, under the direction of President Ronald Reagan, has proposed the 19832.84 Indian Education Act budget, in the October 12, 1982 Federal Register. If this is al lowed to happen, a 34 cut in total funding will resultj The OFFICIAL CONGRESSIONAL HEARINGS HAVE NOT YET BEEN SET TO ENACT THIS PROCESS. YOU MUST ACT NOW TO ALERT YOUR CONGRESSIONAL DELEGATION AND OTHER APPROPRIATE COMMITTEES (SENATE SELECT COMMITTEE ON INDIAN AFFAIRS, EDUCATION, INTERIOR & APPROPRIATIONS, ETC.) TO STOP THIS ATTEMPT TO DRASTICALLY CUT TITLE IV FUNDING. Dear Congressman , It has been brought to my attention that the Federal Register of October 12, 1982, includes appropriation levels for the 1983-8 Indian Education Act (Title IV, P. L. 92-318). I understand that this is a highly irregular procedure since Congress has hot considered or approved appropriation levels for Title IV for FY 1983 I also understand that President Reagan and Education Secretary Terrell Bell are proposing in the Federal Register a total funding cut for Title IV of 34$. This will result in closure of small programs and severe loss of educational services for Indian Students and adults. Your help is needed in maintaining adequate funding levels for our children. Please let me know your feelings on this matter. SAMPLE LETTER Since rely, SENATORS MARK 0. HATFIELD Washington D.C.
