TRIBAL COUNCIL ELECTIONS
This year, the majority of Tribal Council seats are open for nomination
and election. This will give interested tribal members the opportunity
to be elected to the Tribal Council, and provide their services to assist
in reaching our goal of Restoration and overall, betterment of The Confed
erated Tribes of Grand Ronde. Article IV, Section 3 of our By-laws
states: No person shall be a member of the Tribal Council who is not
an enrolled member of The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde of a descend
ant of relatives living or dead, who iswas a member listed of the official
census of 1954- (final roll).
Section 4. states: Any candidate for the Tribal Council must be at least
eighteen (18) years of age to hold office, must meet membership require
ments, and is deemed by tribal members as likely to regularly participate
in Tribal Council meetings and otherwise contribute to the stated object
ives of the tribe.
Two absentee ballots are printed in this edition of "Smoke Signals"
for your convenience. If other members of your family are eligible
and would like to submit an absentee ballot, they may do so on a separate
sheet of paper. Please make sure all of the information is included
- on all additional absentee ballots. A schedule for the absentee voting
deadline is listed below.
August 1 - August 31, 1982: Absentee Votes - Absentee voter forms are included
in the this newsletter along with a list of nominations received to date.
These forms must be mailed or delivered to the Tribal office by
August 31, 1982. The absentee voter forms must have your selections for
Tribal Council members handwritten. They must also be signed and dated.
Each eligible tribal member is allowed one (l) vote for each vacancy on
The Tribal Council (a total of seven (7).
After August 31. 1982, those tribal members wishing to submit nominations
and cast votes for Tribal Council candidates can do so only at the September
12, 1982 General Coucil meeting. No proxy votes will be allowed. Please
note the respective closing dates for nominations and absentee voting.
Be sure to make your vote count by meeting those deadlines.
The positions up for election and names of persons filling those positions
are rioted on the cover page with asterisks.
The positions of.i' Chairman, Vice-Chairman and Sec. Areas, will be filled
by individual ballot. The remaining four (4) Councilperson positions will
be filled by rank of file. The four candidates receiving the most votes
will be appointed to one (l) year Council terms each.
